METAL GEAR SOLID V: THE PHANTOM PAIN

[spoilers] The "SKULLS" Parasite Unit
Something I've never really gotten is why the Skulls are so zombie-like (I understand it's due to the specific parasites they're infected with grant them awesome cool powers, but they royally screw up their nervous systems ), yet when they see a threat, they go full-on psycho.

Is this like Quiet gaining superhuman sniping abilities (two master eyes, fast reflexes) whenever she gets that shadow around her eyes?

I think they were plugs toward Silent Hills, which was a game Kojima was working on while doing MGS5. The twitchy movements, creepy atmosphere of the devil's house, the mist when the Skulls attack, they all feel like homages to SH.

The shadow around the eyes, not sure how it'd relate, but it reminds me of some horror elements that I saw in Deadly Premonition, of all things. DP probably pulled that from somewhere, but I haven't taken the time to look for the source.

My guess is that Kojima was practicing his horror angle with Fox Engine while Silent Hills was development. Shame it got canned :/
You could say they traded their sanity for superpowers. More powers means less sanity thus making them into perfect loyal supersoldiers its the price you pay the parasites for their "gift". Many types of the parasites were made. For example Quiets and Code Talkers parasite is "the one that covers" pretty much making them into plants - this parasite Code Talker salveged from The Ends corpse.

The skulls have three types of parasites that you could say work as different units, the mist, the camoflauge (female sniper unit) and amor. Due to Quiets parasite being of another strain, she does not lose her mind.

or they had no choice in the matter like the experiments to Greyfox.

Yeah, SH is the original king of creepy atmosheric horror in videogames, imo.
I'd be a bit saddened if that's all there is to why they shamble along and then 'activate' when they see Snake.

Ah a lovely retcon, or perhaps just suspension of disbelief? :D
I can imagine Code Talker walking around picking up a limb or two of The End!

I think the skulls snipers were infected with The One That Covers (they have the same powers as Quiet, invisibility and they move similarly to sniper spots in combat), along with a general 'mess up a nervous system' to keep them as 'inactive' subordinates to SkullFace.
It is because they didn't win. They are snails.

No, if you paid attention, some "organization" (which were probably remnants of the Philosophers) retrieved the body parts of the Cobra Unit members. Even though they were all over the place, the parasites keep them from decomposing.

Code Talker was recruited by that organization and provided a sample of one type of the parasites for him to work on.

^This is Skull Face we are talking about. Still, the trade off for the powers is that the parasites numb your cognitive functions, making you both mentally and physically into a zombie that just follows orders. On top of this they are given high tech suits.

Thanks for this info, can't believe I missed that snippet! Knowing me, it was probably an entire tape I missed :P

I loved the suits the Skulls had. Top favourite of mine is the Snipers' augmented orange eye-scope. Looks really badass especially when lit up and looking through the sniper scope. They're also probably the creepiest, imo. Their faces are just so emotionless and detached (almost dead! :P ).

I also love the Mist unit's attire too. The bald head, creepy glowing eyes and the facemask altogether make them look both terrifying and very intimidating. Doubly so because their brow is twisted into an intense, angry looking frown.
