METAL GEAR SOLID V: THE PHANTOM PAIN
Voice actors
I know at this point it's just raising a dead argument, but I have to say after playing over 100 hours of the game... why was Hayter replaced?

Kojima said David Hayter wasn't returning for MGSV because he wanted someone who was more expressive, someone who could show more emotion in their voice. So what do we get... Sutherland delivering almost no dialogue, and when he does it's in a gruff monotone with no emotion.

To this day I still want to understand what happened there. Was there some kind of falling out? Or did Kojima get a big head and decided he wanted a Hollywood actor because he was too good for Hayter? Or was it because he was jealous of the fact that Hayter was so well-liked by MGS fans and thought of as Snake?

As far as I know, Hayter was the only VA that was replaced. The VA in the Japanese version wasn't. All the other characters remain the same even though they're all older now as well.

So what happened? I'm enjoying MGSV (for the most part) but more and more I'm feeling like Kojima must have just lost it at the end, maybe his ego got too big for him to handle, and that's what lead to some of the decisions he made (no Hayter, leaving Konami.) These are all assumptions of course.

What? He chose because of his voice? Not at all. I think it was because of he's facial expressions for being a great actor not about his voice at all but that was also a factor because he's vocie is... more natural than Hayter's? Yeah, there's the reasons.
Hayter would not fit in this game, he's a very B-movie sort of actor and it's hard to take him seriously when he made his voice more gravelly and edgy every game.

Furthermore, he was never supposed to be Big Boss in the first place. Naked Snake and Big Boss are two completely different characters despite them being the same person. Imagine MGS4's closing scenes with Hayter voicing Big Boss. Very unfitting, and very cringy to think about.

Sutherland is a great in-between for Big Boss's earlier years and his role as an old villain. Hayter would absolutely suck at what is required for this game's BB.

He would fit perfectly, the same way he fitted perfectly in all metal gear games i have played till now (i can't play mgs4, i don't have ps3)
You mean MGS 1, 2 & 4, where he was Solid Snake? And 3 & PW where he was Naked Snake and a young Big Boss?

MGS5 was intended to show Big Boss's transition from a good guy to a villain. It's darker in tone to the other games and Big Boss doesn't act like how he was when he still had both of his eyes and had to kill his lifelong mentor.

The Big Boss of MGSV has lost MSF and a part of his body, been set back to square one on the creation of Outer Heaven, seen his still living friends either go crazy with revenge (Kaz) or betray him and his comrades (Emmerich)

He's older too, middle aged by this point. Weathered by combat yet still strong.

Now, I don't know about you, but David Hayter would be the last guy I'd want to interpret a character like that. Naked Snake was young and hadn't suffered much and Solid Snake is much more of an archetypal "action hero" character than Big Boss. He fit those roles. Not here...

and the big boss and solid snake are the VA in japanese, so that argumen doesn't make any sense
Japanese and English are not the same languages. Despite the fact that Konami is a Japanese studio, the English translations have always been what most people across the world recognize.

Also this new "big boss" doesn't have any reason to be mute, but i almost never hear him speak, i just played mission 6 and BB got grabbed by a giant hand and got confroted by the "skull face", boss reaction? ....*crikets*... he almost never speak, does this continue to the entire game?? i understand "big" hollywood actors aren't cheap,
i just feel is too drastic change from the other games.
In earlier metal gear games, snake was used to create more natural dialogue when a long cut scene was playing out, and a character was explaining things to the player, that doesn't happen in this game unless on optional cassette tapes, so they really didn't need to make big boss talk more beyond that. I think It makes him a better character as a stealthy covert operative when he's not constantly repeating worthless stuff back to people, and he still does it in this game anyway, just less. Actions speak louder than words, a lot of the game is about this idea, and there's no reason for a secret agent to be talking while sneaking, anyway, even if it's to his rival for the game.
I also just think sutherland was better suited for this role, hayter's grumbling raspy voice was charming in peace walker, but it really doesn't fit the tone of mgsv. I seriously can't imagine the paz helicopter scene with him lol
It's also just weird to me, why do you guys want your character in a stealth game to talk a lot? because the earlier games did it? can't you let go of that and look at the game for what it is?
Wow, seeing this thread is a blast from the past. To be fair, in time I came to agree that Sutherland did a good job playing a bitter, more hardened Snake, the Snake that would become Big Boss and go down the misguided path that he would ultimately regret. Still, it's a shame the way the relationship between Hayter and MGS ended considering how beloved he was by many fans.

Well, it's all in the past now. Metal Gear (Solid) is gone and not likely coming back unless Konami loses control of the IP. Unless you want to play a MGS pachinko game.
I'm not buying the "David Hayter couldn't do Venom Snake so they got Keifer Sutherland". Other person brought up a good point in that the Japanese Voice actor is the same for all MGS games (Akio Otsuka). Seems like it doesnt matter if its naked snake, solid snake, trouser snake or venom snake its always the same Akio Otsuka. Might be 1 or 2 exceptions where Akio didnt play Snake but i'm not gonna try to look it up. Then there are all the games in the last few years that have Hollywood actors doing voiceovers and even having their likeness being used. Mads Mikkelsen, Norman Reedus, Lea Seydoux, Keanu Reeves, John Bernthal, Kit Harington, Kevin Spacey, Rami Malik, Ellen Paige and many more.

They used some non-conventional mocap technology. Which requires to perform some actions while speaking in those action parts. Hayter was too old to get the moves right, as I understand. Adequate explanaitions might be find someplace else online.
What...a...♥♥♥♥? He is 5 years younger then Sutherland...
Oh... Sometimes you reed some deep ♥♥♥♥ on internet and especialy MGS forums

Main topic: Hayter wasn't even called by Kojima. He said it in interview

Main theory is - He(Kojima) wanted "A Hideo Kojima game" not "beloved voice actor by community game". That's it... Pride only reason.

I googled this thing and apparently David Hayter claims he was wronged by Konami and Kojima as they left him hanging without providing any explanation, so he was taken out like trash, and said that he wouldn't work with the company ever again. Kinda like that

I know a lot of people disliked Kiefer but I for one, like him, cuz not only he did an amazing job on 24, but his voice is also really great

The last person? You have a small imagination then. So Tom Holland would be a better actor for that? Jake Lloyd? Stephen Merchant? Jordan Peele?

We don't even have to stray outside of VAs, even though Sutherland is a Hollywood Actor. You'd rather have Jason Marsden? Sean Schemmel? Tom Kenny? Paul St Peter?

Come on, dude. You could have just said "lol I dunno. I think Hayter is corny, so I'm happy they switched" and left it at that.
