Kojima doesn't seem to distinguish between Venom (the player) and Big Boss here at all. This goes with what Big Boss himself says in the game, that Venom (the player) IS creating the Legend of Big Boss. That's what this game is about. Yet players are upset they are not playing "The real Big Boss". They will never play "The real Big Boss" because "The real Big Boss" does not exist. It is something made up between the player and Kojima.
Maybe Venom exists to be Big Boss's avatar in the same way he exists to be ours. We and Big Boss are creating Venom together. The intersection of art and audience.

The story of Big Boss will outlive MGS as long as fans keep telling that story, now that Kojima is gone. Kojima has wanted to leave MGS many times - famously teasing MGS4 with a shot of Snake attempting suicide. But fan demand (sometimes death threats) brought him back, Konami brought him back, time and time again. Fan demand kept the legend of Snake alive. Kojima is acknowledging that.
The concepts of Virtual Reality Kojima explored in the past translate very well here. We played the previous games, gaining much experience and bonding with Big Boss, John. Thus the whole
Hypnotherapy thing in the story. Projecting ourselves as the main character for most of the time. But we were not him, and his legend was his own. We wanted to be Big Boss, and we got it right here. Through the whole game we thought we were that one character we wanted to be. In the end, we weren't. But through our actions and delusions, we actually earned the title ourselves.
The whole story breaks the 4th fall, but in a much larger scale than before. Now of course newcomers would not experience this, not by far. The whole thing is very simple, but effective.
The story itself is another thing, but the themes the game conveys are simply brilliant. Apart from the main ones like language, race and revenge the one that left the most impact on me was mental trauma. It is present through the whole game. They didn't explore it in a direct way, but they did enough. From the whole intro/prologue, till the end game. You are constantly questioning what is real, and what is not. You know something isn't right. And the whole thing just feels weird, disturbing, unreal. In a way it is sick. The truth, i mean.
I remember the very first trailers when the game was not called Metal Gear, but just The Phantom Pain that was to be released under Moby D. Studios.
It felt like a horror game.

this is a nice way of putting it! i feel differently about "his legend was his own tho" because according to Big Boss himself the legend belongs to both Venom and Big Boss. it is something they share. hence the smile at the end, maybe. the legend cannot be Big Boss's only because it requires the player's input. literally.
thanks for posting those videos. i hadn't seen that second, creepy, black & white video. i like Kojima's direction in this new horror-film style that is prevelant in MGSV. he was feeling trapped by the demand for cutscenes, i think this new direction (inspired by working closely w Del Torro no doubt) helped bring a lot of new energy to MGSV.
