Can't record steam overlay using fraps
and by extension, fraps also doesn't capture those chat notifications that appear at the bottom right of the screen, which is want I want to do

strangely enough I can record the steam overlay in other games; for example it works fine in Dark Souls 2

any ideas on how to fix this?

it's a long shot - are you using borderless fullscreen? it makes some problems, normal fullscreen could solve it

i've tried it in windowed, borderless fullscreen, and normal fullscreen and it still doesn't work

Fraps is old, outdated and also abandoned by its devs now and i wouldn't use this software. Records only in old AVI and is performance heavy.

well honestly that doesn't really address my question, but I may as well try different recording software

what would you suggest that I use? my friend once suggested that I use shadowplay but I don't have the necessary graphics card to use it or something like that

I'm not 100% sure, but I think plays.tv software is able to record those.

I know for a fact it can record the raptr overlay, but I haven't tested the steam overlay.

Also, if you have raptr, it already comes with a plays.tv plugin

thank you for the suggestion, but it says my video card isn't compatible with that program, so yeah RIP

I'm currently using Mirillis Action. Shadowplay is good also, but if i wanna 100% smooth gameplay video, Shadowplay isn't so good. And well, as you said, it's not good for you if you don't have proper video card for it. Only Mirillis is able to record 100% smooth 60 fps gameplay for me. And it can also record surround sound. And it should be able to record Steam overlay also. The only let down about Mirillis is that it's not for free.

OBS doesn't record the overlay, I have that for streaming and it shows only the game.

What's your video card again?
Which version of the program did you try to install?

Now that's weird.

I play on windowed, and if I select "window capture" it just shows a frozen screen.

Only "game capture" actually captures the game

Yeah I messed around with OBS for a bit and it can record the overlay just fine. Although when I import OBS footage into Sony Vegas, no video shows up, but the audio does?? I suppose this is an entirely different problem, though I think OBS would be my best choice here if not for this issue, fugg

probably gonna have to do some googling on this matter myself, anyway thanks for the suggestions guys

ati radeon hd 5670
and according to this[support.plays.tv] it does not have some thing called "Video Coding Engine" that is necessary for PlaysTV to work

not sure which version, but i assume the latest since i downloaded it from the front page of the PlaysTV site
