METAL GEAR SOLID V: THE PHANTOM PAIN

METAL GEAR SOLID V: THE PHANTOM PAIN

The story and dialogue in these games are hilariously bad
If you view the stories in these games like an unintentional bad movie, it's great. Movies like The Room, Troll 2 and Samurai Cop.

But Kojima fans actually say, with complete sincerity, that Kojima is a visionary and a master story teller. I'm stunned every time I hear this.

I mean, take this game for example, the cutscene where you're transporting Miller back to Mother Base after rescuing him, his dialogue is straight out of an emo teenager's Tumblr. I could almost hear Linkin Park playing in the background.

"WE WERE DOGS SNAKE!"
"CRAWLING IN MY SKIN!"

Then there's the scene where Big Boss lifts up D-Dog as a puppy and god-rays shine onto him. I literally laughed out loud at its ridiculousness.

The list goes on and on, from people crapping their pants to Old Snake kneeling down to look up Naomi Hunter's skirt, to Quiet being half-naked because she "breathes through her skin" (great excuse, Kojima), or Paz sitting there in her underwear. I don't care if you say she's in her 20s. She looks 13. Kojima has the mind of a teenage boy. It goes into creepy territory. And I'm no SJW, believe me.

The dialogue is bad, the story is a convoluted mess, it has juvenile humour, it's b-movie shlock. Which is fine, except Kojima fanboys actually view these games as serious, profound, well-written games. They get offended when I say I enjoy these games because they're bad.

The gameplay in Phantom Pain, however, is top-notch. Can't fault Kojima there.

The Lion King reference was actually both funny and nice for me.
But yep, we know basically everything you've said here. :|

Kojima's idea was to make facial expressions speak for them selves... weird, but that's Kojima

Are you talking about Metal Gear in general or The Phantom Pain?

In general. Phantom Pain, for me, is actually the least silly as the cutscenes and dialogue have been dramatically scaled back. The story is in the background for most of the game.

I've listened to the tapes. What's your point here if you don't mind me asking?

I actually do think that is the point of it. It's like a tarantino movie with all that silly unrealistic blood and those strangely cheesy dialogues. I get your point, but some creators like to leave their mark on the story, their "print"

so your experience just depends if you listened to the tapes on time or later

I enjoyed Code Talker tapes most, he speaks a little like Yoda. Ocelot's narration sounds great, Miller is too angry till it comes to KazBurgers. There is entire MGSV story

You're comparing apples to oranges; it's a game not an award winning movie production. Your analysis is correct, however, they're two completely different genres. My comlaint is that too many games, nowadays, have way too many cutscenes which are the reason games now require soo much HD space. HOwever, it is what it is so I'll just have to saddle up and ride on. Have a great dy.

every story is written, and that's what i'm comparing. We should just take it as it is.
have you never played MGS?

they're all cheesy. MGS's storytelling is based of Bond films (especially Snake Eater)

but its also a video game. The story is really entertaining but if you play games like metal gear exclusively for story you're doing it wrong.

Did you read my post? Also, saying that sounds incredibly weird to me. Outside of Phantom Pain, it seems every MGS game is only story. Codec conversations and cutscenes take up a huge portion of the game. In many of them you have a long cutscene, then you walk ten yards, have a long codec conversation, then walk another ten yards for another cutscene.

Well, just because the tapes exist doesn't mean the story isn't in the background. In fact, relegating most of the story to optional audio tapes is, in my mind, the very definition of pushing the story into the background.

you are right, it is optional, for people who want to know the story they will listen to every tape, and ones who don't will go ask on forums what is wrong with the story

On cassette tapes. That's actually pretty sad to me.
