This also wasn't one of the better installments in my humble opinion. It's not bad or anything, but several of the other installments I found a lot more enjoyable, including Rising and Ground Zeroes, both of which are available on Steam. They're also both less dependent on existing story than The Phantom Pain, though that's not saying much.
Ideally, you would begin with Metal Gear 1 and/or 2 (2 is a significantly better game and it's not up for debate), then go through Solid 1, 2, 3, 4 in that order, then Peace Walker and Ground Zeroes. I understand that's a lot though, so if you just want to get to TPP ASAP, you could get by with Metal Gear 1, S1, S3, PW and GZ. I really wouldn't recommend any less than that.
This also isn't a particularly in-depth stealth series. It's more like an action-stealth hybrid, where both influences are pretty basic. You won't find anything as complex as the lighting and sound systems in Splinter Cell, for example. It's still perfectly competent, unlike a million tacked on stealth missions in older shooters, but it's more often than not just a matter of keeping terrain between you and the enemies or lying down to reduce your visibility.
If you are really focused o nthe story, then no, playing standalone isn't worth it.
If you enjoy gameplay then it's a definite hard recommedation as stealth games go. The gameplay loop is great, with lods of tools, options and approaches to everything. Graphcis also still hodl up well enought, Ai is pretty dman good whenever you trigegr alarms/searches and such.
Onyl warning, expect the first hour to be a boring slot. Kojima beeing the weirdo he is for some reason decided to make the first mission an absolutely slog where you have basically none of the games mechanics, options or other strengths available, and literally spend minutes at a time just crawling half crippled along hospital floors. AFter that it gets amazing though, and if you want you can just read a short story summary of mission 1, and downlaod a savegame fro msomeone else at mission 2 start.
it's fun, but a metal gear newbie who's starting with the last, nothing-but-retcons-and-lore-filler trying to tie 30 years worth in a complete circle, and is "barely" an MG/MGS in the traditional playstation action game sense, but a more realism-slanted FPS?
If you want a generic overview of what we're talking about, this is exactly what wikipedia is for: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metal_Gear
Having said that? for ~$5usd or whatever on next sale, you do get to sneak around and do violent stuff. sneak up and do stuff, snipe from cover, and yes you are rewarded for never being seen.
If you just take all the super-science in stride (it's not supernatural, it's SCIENCE!) when it's presented to you, who knows, maybe it'll pique your curiosity and you'll go investigate the earlier titles, especially 3, and 2... all of them. Just because you're "late to the party" doesn't mean you won't love the whole series.
And if you like Kiefer Sutherland in your ear constantly? That alone is funny - for a while anyway. Also has Troy Baker as Ocelot (if you played The Last of Us, you'll immediately recognize Joel's voice) and Robin Atkin as Miller has as nearly as many VO credits as Tara Strong does. (who's also in this game, a little bit, as Paz!)
Konami threw money at this series the way Bethesda threw money at Fallouts... and just like Fallouts there's a core set of very dedicated players who will be playing this game until their 80s or until their deaths, as long as their fingers still have some dexterity and their eyesight make out stuff on the screen.
Just go watch some gameplay videos. You'll know in 10 minutes if it's for you. Or, buy it, and play for about 60 mins. Refund it if you're not having any fun, or keep it cause it's cheap.
It's never late to start this game. If you are interested in starting this game, I'll recommned you to get the METAL GEAR SOLID V: THE DEFINITIVE EXPERIENCE instead, which will include MGSV: GROUND ZEROES, which is the Prologue Mission to MGSV: THE PHANTOM PAIN.
If you start with MGSV: GROUND ZEROES, you will have a better basic understanding of the conflict at the start of the game in MGSV: THE PHANTOM PAIN.
Best regards.
