METAL GEAR SOLID V: THE PHANTOM PAIN

METAL GEAR SOLID V: THE PHANTOM PAIN

Buy in 2023?
So I bought Death Stranding and it's really good.

So I think I might like this game too.

Is this game offline?

Or if it's online, do you know if the service is still online since it's 8 years old? Or if they stop the service will it still work?

Game is primarily PvE single-player stealth but there are some minor online aspects to it excluding MGO.
Online Service is still online but don't expect live service updates or anything lol.
Game is really good; if you do buy it, get the definitive version so you can play Ground Zeroes with context. Replayability will be endless and even more endless once you get mods if you want. Play the game vanilla first run-in, then get mods and go nuts.

Just know that this game has little in common with Death Stranding. Aside from lots of cutscenes and Kojima. IMHO, the online portions of MGSV was never really enjoyable. The closest comparison would be Ghost Recon: Wildlands.

I like PVE / single player games more than Coop! So I can play it completely offline? Say if they even switch off the online service I'll be good and not loose out on any single player experience? Because that's my one fear with games that need servers to run.

Yes, you can play it completely offline.

Ghost Recon: Wildlands I played - there were online multiplayer co-op missions, true, but in single player bots can replace them pretty well. (Also it was good but it was really too repetitive - all missions repeat very quickly.) I like cut-scenes in general, Wildlands didn't really have very good ones though.

Dude it was just on sale (Winter Sale that ended 5th Jan), why didn't you ask then?

Yes it's a great game. You buy Def. Ed as Johnny Dej said, you play V GZ first, then V TPP.
Then once you'll be done with both, will look up the extra ending on YT and experiencing some of that "Phantom Pain" a lot of us felt when the game ended, be ready to set your expectations to realistic and think about getting Metal Gear Survive as a bonus.
As a spinoff (and SP game first & foremost), I think it's also a good game.

And yes you can play MGS V offline, you just get less resources and miss out FOB mode.

Btw, I don't remember if GR: Breakpoint has offline now, but you can play it solo and for the 98 % of the game it feels more tailored towards (and better at) SP than GR: Wildlands.

I would consider Metal Gear Survive last on the list.
Once you're done, get MGS3 and/or Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker:
If you don't have an emulator or console that can get these two games, there's no shame in watching youtube walkthroughs. The story is more entertaining in those two anyways.

Metal Gear Survive isn't a Metal Gear Solid game in my opinion; same with revengeance, but everybody has their own opinion.

While main idea behind Peace Walker was interesting, it seemed a bit cringe to me (I've watched it on YouTube). MGS 3, on the other hand, is an absolute classic & a masterpiece.

You can also get MGS 2 on PC and supposedly after community patches it's playable (haven't tested yet), but it's not tied in the same way that MGS 3, MGS V and MGS: PW are.

I was surprised with Survive. After horrible beta I expected nothing and I was pleasantly surprised with what the game offered. It was so good to again jog in that buttery smooth, sweet Fox Engine animations and world. And stealth worked well. And surprisingly, the game has a story and it even got interesting. And after getting through early jank, it was fun.

I was surprised how much "Metal Gear Solid" is in Metal Gear Survive.

It's a wholely different game from deaths stranding, but it is still wholely enjoyable. It is primarily offline with some online features that are not required by any means. The main benefits of online gameplay is specific unlocks that are really unnecessary if you just wanna have fun in the world of Metal Gear. Haven't played it in a while but I haven't heard of servers being shut down so you should be fine to play online.

Id say Death Stranding and MGSV are the same game but the game play elements within the engine are entirely different. The story telling is similar but Death Stranding is a better told story, while I think MSGV has better characters.

IDK either way you should totally still get this. The game will be coming out again allegedly on MGS Collection Vol.2
