In my opinion Hayter delivery would worked in MGS5. but Kojima had to stroke his ego by hiring a hollywood actor. Kris zimmerman the voice director of the MGS series said the kojima was lusting for a hollywood actor to voice his games for a long time. he even asked kurt russell to voice in MGS 3.
Kojima finally got Konami to write the big check needed to hire a hollywood actor in MGS V, So poor Hayter lost his job LOL
If they did make another MGS, I really really really wish they'd make a new main character. Big Boss has been ruined enough and Solid Snake's story is over. It should be someone unique from them.
Let's face it, Hayter, while iconic as Snake, tended to come off as a tad cartoony at times. You'd think he'd understand how the business in general works seeing as he's been in, and written/directed for movies.
Methinks Hayter has eaten one too many sour grapes. I found Sutherland's voice a nice change of pace and it reflected Snake's descent into losing his humanity/soul. And it reflected the character well. Hayter just needs to let it go. As a professional/talent, he needs to accept that it happened and move on. But to be fair, the gaming media keeps poking him about it. You really don't see/hear any of the other past MGS talent whining about it. They have all moved on with their lives and to other projects/hobbies.
But like another poster said(paraphrashing here), Kojima had always wanted a movie actor to do the voice for so long, but they would either turn it down, or Konami just wasn't willing to pony up the money at the time. When MGS first dropped, Konami wasn't too keen on it and thought it'd be a massive dud(they said the same thing of the original MG on the MSX and told Kojima to do a *snicker* REAL game(they wanted to be like everyone else at the time)) Kiefer has done VA in a few other games as well. The 24 game if I recall, and the excellent COD:WaW(a very underrated game)
But on the whole I agree with you. Hayter is acting like an angsty teen.
tl;dr: Hayter needs to let it go.
But sadly I think Konami gonna hire Hayter because he is more cheap than a quality voice actor.
Reminds me of Halo. Halo's story should of ended with Halo 3. You finished the fight. It's over, time to move on.
