now your asking if you start with metal gear solid 5 phantom pain. will you have no idea whats going on?
NO the story of metal gear solid 5 is understandable without playing the previous titles.
And while you wont know the full extent of every single character. Its not hard to figure them out atleast enough to understand the story.
However how this game fits within the franchise will escape you. HOw this games story fits within the franchise will escape you. Also you wont get a full understanding of characters motives. Reasons behind their actions etc.
Just for example
While the games are generally labeled metal gear being the first metal gear 2 being the second then it starts over metal gear solid. Then metal gear solid 2 then 3 then 4 then 5. a
This is not actually the chronological order . some games are set before other that was realeased first. .
For example metal gear and metal gear 2 happened after metal gear solid 3 and others in the franchise just for an example. even though metal gear and metal gear 2 were the first two metal gears to be released.
YOu will get the basic story of metal gear solid 5 but you will miss alot of context.
So if you were in my position would you go ahead and play this game or try to play them all in order? Or at least watch a video on them or something
In the main game, at the start, you WILL be confused. But over the course of the game things will get explained.
If you can, try to play Peace Walker, just if you can. If you really want, maybe even play MGS3 as well or just watch walkthroughs of either one so you get the gist. It's all the same, but if you play MGS3, then Peace Walker, and THEN play Ground Zeroes > The Phantom Pain-- in that order
your experience will be way better. Trust me.
Just in my opinion, because the story for Big Boss (Who's the main character in MGSV), starts at MGS3 or debatably even Peace Walker, so it's very much okay to start watching or playing for yourself there.
So yeah, you're good to go
Whenever you feel confortable enough with it, you might want to watch the story of Peace Walker on Youtube (or play it yourself), it's also what I did. Futurasound productions makes interesting videos about MGS:V and the franchise as a whole, that's how I got into the lore.
If you were asking if this games worth buying, you're probably interested in it, and I'd say go for it, the game offers what you see and a lot more of it in spades. This was my first MG/S game and now I'm a fan thanks to this game. (Ironically enough you will be underwhelmed by the story more than anything!)
hope this helped :)
If this is just like a one-off experience? Sure, there are a few things you wouldn't know as someone that's never played a MGS game, however some of them are easy enough to infer the meaning of, and missing them won't suddenly make this less enjoyable most likely.
But seriously, if you ever plan on playing all of the MGS games, just start from the beginning. Gameplay aside, they're really good games.
I agree, likewise, it would be more logical to at least start at MGS3 for a game such as MGSV to fit with the story.
