D walker won't enter fast mode

Got to the mission where I have to extract Dr Emmirich and use D walker to escape the giant metal gear, but no matter what key i press i can't get D walker in his alternate (Speedy) mode. I press c and shift yet nothing happens. The only controls i do have are for: regular movement, aiming/shooting, picking up and exiting the vehicle, other than that I can't do anything else.

Any help will be appreciated

The D-Walker in Emmirich's lab is a prototype, it doesn't have the running system.
Later in the game, he will develop the real D-Walker with the running system.

The problem will later be to get it out of speedy mode. I never figured that out.
