METAL GEAR SOLID V: THE PHANTOM PAIN

METAL GEAR SOLID V: THE PHANTOM PAIN

Mission 12 Is Awful
This mission is trash. Hide from the gundam, which constantly sees you out of the corner of its stupid robot eyes. ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ joke.

I used the helicopter landing zone further to the east (not the default one), easier to hide from it there I found

I had a rough time too though till I figured that one out xD

Yeah I was replaying that today and I was reminded how (hardly unique to MGSV) one of the most awkward and eye rolling aspects is when they activate the idiot lever and you have do things in one specific way.

At the very least, my own attempts to use common sense were a no go as the menu refused to let me choose an alternate chopper location. On top of the usual idiocy of carting your idiot pal around in the freebie walker gear, only for it to be banished to the phantom zone the next cutscene.

What's that? You want us to call the chopper to the safe spot more than 500 meters away from the giant killer robot? No no no, no new landing location allowed like you did replaying the Miller rescue. No you can't drive a truck to an exfiltration border either or we'll complain it's a loss because... something.

Rolling your eyes at Miller's idiocy being more dangerous than the giant robot you slipped past unnoticed for the third time.

What's the quirk for getting your specified landing spot for Hellboudn then? Calling it ahead of time before you start the cutscene train? Im used to that sort of thing getting overridden.

Same. Just wanted to take a stroll through the good old mission where I remember first seeing a gear. Then got the worst reminder in all MGS.

Yeah for all the game's flaws, USUALY you get to use whatever BS you feel like to get the job done. Hence the draw to keep dusting it off and replaying it. Which makes the times the game slams the brakes and starts making it real awkward to try anything cool that much more jarring.

I mean, in Pitch black you can save one of the cargo containers to fulton yourself to saftey after you blow up the C4. That sort of cool thinking works.

But calling the chopper, and blowing up the C4 while you are sitting inside it as it flies away? Yeah I've had that teleport me back to the ground after the ensuing cutscene in Pitch black. Though that was more hilarious than jarring.

Obviously "LOL Git Gud" isn't the concern, I would not have the luxury of a replay of an already succesful mission. But it's always felt like the tail end of Hellbound is the most awkward mission due to the glut of reality and common sense warping scripting.

push tab, go to map, W to put it in helicopter selection mode and pick a different landing zone
That has always worked for me, assuming you know about this and it not working for you then I have no idea lol

Yeah, the whole "Cleary you've never done it" angle isn't a factor. When I've edited the landing positions mid mission for things like the Miller extraction in #1, Phantom Limbs in a replay just the other day.

Hellbound in particular is just real screwy. No selections allowed when I try helicopter options for that one, whenever it reaches that point of the mission any time I've played it and thought "Hey, let's use a less dumb chopper location like I did *insert every other time here"

Perhaps a better question is not what buttons you are pressing, but WHEN. Are you redirecting the chopper landing before or after the cutscene express starts up? As once you see Huey, chopper choice has always been taken out of my hands.

I'm used to my attempts at calling choppers early in any mission with cutscenes just ****ing with that idea (see above coments about detonating C4 while aboard a flying chopper in Pitch Black, teleporting me back to the ground after the cutscenes). So I'm curious less about menu options, and more circumstances.

I redirect the landing zone when he's looking for me already and I'm physically at the default landing zone hiding behind some rocks just south of it

It's easy. I did it the first time. Not S-Rank, but I completed it on the first attempt without death. I've since S-Rank'd the level and have my own hiding spot that works every time. You just need to find one that works for you.

Huh, well "I'll redirect the chopper, AWAY from where I am!" is certainly not a plan that crossed my mind. Defeats the purpose and claims you don't need to go to the default landing location, if you have to go there after all.

I was all excited but then I saw it's just bog standard footage of the default run, shirtless or not. The smooth run in that video wouldn't need to chuck Huey behind rocks constantly if you could call in for a sane LZ. (It also leaves me thinking. Would skipping the NVG and D-horse in favor of bringing a Cardboard box to mail yourself from one base to the next be more, or less badass?)

Honestly it's not chasing rankings on replays that irks me with Hellbound, so much as how constrained it is compared to the rest of the game offering so many options. "Welp, time to mindlessly walk to the Robot's spawn point. At least I know it's coming so can work around it".

I can only imagine how much more annoying it is for first time players. I've lost track of the times I've read about new players being understandably surprised they got a nonstandard game over by doing the smart thing when faced with a giant robot spawncamping their LZ.

Shoving Huey into a truck or onto your horse, and gunning it for the mission border for the safer extraction method. Whoops!

TL;DR: My own musings are not "Uuuugh, It's Haaaard" cause, you know. I've beaten it like 99% of the population that's ever heard of MGSV. I just think the only hard parts of the mission, are only that way due to the game scrambling to handicap you like a bad GM making things up because you're doing too good.

"Um, uh... And then a giant robot appears five feet in front of you!"
"Cool, I rolled a 27 on my stealth check and escape while carrying a cripple on my back"
"DAMNIT"

Have you tried hidding inside the porta potties next to the second available landing zone?

♥♥♥♥, you can run all the way there, hide there then call in the chopper while sali is looking at the scenery elsewhere.

damn i was trying to do the S rank, so i did the whole mission in a record time, only had to tranq like 3 guys, and then i lost a good 10 minutes on that ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ last part where the sahalentropus is roaming around the helicopter, this part is so ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. If you're lucky at the very beginning when he spots you and you have to run under him, he'll wait there for 20 sec trying to attack where you were and you can instantly hop in the chopper as soo nas you arrive. But if his ♥♥♥♥♥♥ AI doesn't trigger the attack well you're ♥♥♥♥♥♥.
Anc contrary to the rest of the game, the AI is clearly cheating, he clearly always know where you are and he never search more than 50 meters away from you..
This is really a let down, i don't think i've ever felt like the game was cheating once in MGSV beside that ♥♥♥♥♥♥ part

You just can't do anything, i've finished this mission 4 times now and it's all luck
This "chase" really feels cheap and lazy, he just seems to always be searching near you and even if you were silent or he saw you somewhere but you run to the opposite side behind a big rock, you can bet your ass he'll be coming 100 meter away from where he originally saw you to check aroudn that ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ rock you are behind, this doesn't make any sense..
Sometimes the human soldiers AI feels a bit too dumb, but man the sahalentropus AI is just using wallhack and it's blatant idk HOW they playtested this and said "yeah it's good let's put it in the game in that state and never patch it"

I still got the S-Rank with 25 minutes (10 lost on the robot) and one hit taken (by him obviously) and zero alerts / combat alerts. So at least whe nhe spots you that doesnt count as an alert so that's that, i was able to get "perfect stealth, no kills"

Pro tip:

Have vehicle drop. Put Emmerich there and throw smoking gas. Drive the car and enemies wont notice u. After the cutscene, smoke still there, Gundam wont see u, drive the car and go as far as u can. Call pequad. Mission accomplished. Lol

Ah, salt

Fyi he isnt always near you, if you warp(warp because i doubt your abilities) away from the last place he saw you, he will stay there for the most part. After that he randomly roams and calls bots
