METAL GEAR SOLID V: THE PHANTOM PAIN

METAL GEAR SOLID V: THE PHANTOM PAIN

Replaying series from the beginning... cutscenes are killing me!
TL;DR I'm replaying the series after 16 years. Cutscenes are long and numerous. Is MGS4 and MGS5 also this bad regarding how numerous and how long the cutscenese are???

When I first played MGS1 on PS1 I thought it was possibly the greatest game ever made at the time. I went on to play Sons of Liberty and Snake Eater. All were fantastic.

Flash forward 16 years and I've decided to play through it again, but now I also have MGS4 and MGS5 although I've never played 4 and 5.

When I started replaying MGS1 I was immediately reminded how long the cutscenese were... but it was tolerable and interesting. Then I got to Sons of Liberty... I fell asleep several times because the cutscenes were every few minutes and they seemed to last 10-25 minutes each. SOL had more cutscenes than actual gameplay. Frankly it was irritating. Especially the dialogue between Rose and Raiden when they're having those long emo talks.

At this point I'm almost afraid to play the rest of the series because I feel it will ruin the good gaming memories I have of these games. For example; After replaying SOL I felt like never ever ever playing it again whereas I previously thought SOL was one of the greatest games ever.

Anyone else?

I watched a full gameplay from MGS4 and almost die from cancer... there's probably no game as cheesy, tacky and badly written than MGS4 (not true but you get the point). The cutscenes are eternal and boring.

As for MGS5 all the opposite, you'll be dying for a cutscene after the first hours to the point that you'll feel like the devs forgot about the game and left you on an open world to baloon kidnap people.

How bout watch what is happening instead of feeling forced to watch it

As for MGS1 and MGS2... I've learned nostalgia is an awesome thing to look at but never touch... there are many games that I know I won't replay or buy again (despite the bombardment of remakes we are having).

Those 2 are on the list...

Increadibly enough Matsuno's RPGs (squaresoft) and castlevania game hold up beatifully for me (when they are supposed to be slower paced games)

MGS4 is way worse. Whereas past MGS take about 5 minutes to explain simple ideas, MGS4 takes about a half hour.

However, MGSV is leagues better in that regard. The narrative is still large and arguably the most detailed in the series, but the cutscenes aren't as long and numerous simply because the game doesn't take ages to covey it's ideas and does so with subtlety. Yes, ACTUAL SUBTLETY in a Metal Gear game.

Oh, and not all of the story is told through cutscenes; there's a lot told during gameplay, Half-Life style.

Also in MGS5... there's like 5 seasons of GoT material buried under the cassette tapes you get along the story.

It's like obe of those old radio soap operas/plays (at least in my country existed), but I say it in a good way, Atkins and Baker are on fire on this game.

OP, you can instead play Thief 1.

That game is far superior than MGS 1-3.(Both story wise and gameplay wise. It also has much less cutscenes and more gameplay.)

Don't want to upset you but..

Cutscenes:

MGS1: 3+ hours + codec
MGS2: 5+ hours + codec
MGS3: 4+ hours + codec
MGS4: 8+ hours + codec
MGSPW: 3 hours + 6+ h. tapes
MGSV (TPP): 3+ hours + 6+ h. tapes

As you can see it's almost the same throughout the series except MGS4.

If I fell asleep during the long cutscenes of MGS2 then I'll most likely die of old age (or cancer) during MGS4.

Oh WOW! Kaneko wasn't kidding about MGS4... I really might die watching 8hrs of cutscenes. Howlongtobeat says the game takes 18hrs to finish. Eight hours of cutscenes just seems crazy... crazy... crazy...

Now I'm more discouraged than before I started this thread lol. I dunno. I think I'll just keep playing through them and keep my expectations in check when watching the loooooooong and many cutscenes. Afterall, SOT was still good... it just caught me off guard because I don't remember the cutscenese being that numerous and long.

To everyone: Thanks for the info fellas. I'm starting Snake Eater tonight. If my memory serves me correctly then Snake Eater was arguably the best out of the first three if not at least tied with MGS1 as the best. I think this was the one where we meet the original Big Boss who trained the new Big Boss whom was the source of the DNA that led to the Les Enfants Terribles (Spelling might be wrong).

Nonetheless, thanks yall.
