Why did Big Boss want Solid Snake to fail in Metal Gear 1?

So, at this point of the story Big Boss is back commanding FOXHOUND and he was training Solid Snake (David). Big Boss knew he was his clone, but David didn't, but that bring the question, why did he want him to fail/die in Outer Heaven when he sent him there?

To test the security of Outer Heaven. Since if he couldnt do it, no one can.

Big Boss didnt want Solid Snake to fail. He wanted Snake to invade Outer Heaven, "Rescue" Fox and come back with false information about them not possessing an actual Metal Gear. But Snake went too far.

One theory is that Big Boss wanted Venom Snake to die so that he could fake his own death.
