But keep in mind you can (and will) get banned because of using mods.
This is incorrect; I use mods for this game since I first got the PC version and have not ♥♥♥♥♥♥ banned. It depends entirely on what you're using and how though. Most mods for this game are purely cosmetic (like texture or model edits), so they won't affect the game in any significant way. With that said, there are a few game-changing mods out there. I'd strongly recommend Infinite Heaven to get the most out of the endgame, as that gives you a boatload of options to customize the game to your fitting (such as diversifying the vehicles you may find in free-roam/side-ops, adjusting enemy stats like health and sight range, etc), and IH will also automatically disable itself upon doing FOBs, so you never need to worry about it screwing that up.
