Mission 16: Traitors' Caravan

I almost gave up and donned the Chicken Hat. Luckily, I eventually managed to extract the truck at the airport then get out in an armored car (with Quiet sniping in support) and more through luck than skill (running the Skulls over in the ATV apparently deals a lot of damage) I won the mission after many, many tries. My question is this: I almost gave up; are there many more unavoidable story missions that are quite as frustrating as this, or at least as disproportionate to the power-ups/weapons I've managed to accrue at 21% completion?

Are you making sure you're always upgrading your equipment and buddies, developing Mother Base, sending the AI out on Combat Assignments, etc.? This game is not like any other shooter I've played in the way it expects you to evolve your combat powers just to keep up with some pretty fiendish enemy AI. And a few frustrating missions.

If you find yourself stuck at a certain mission, you can always watch numerous youtube walkthroughs. The IGN walkthrough guide is particularly good, since they provide a link to videos that explain how to get an S-rank and complete all objectives in a single run.

>Equip Battle Armor and Bandana (optional).
>Take D-Horse as Buddy
>Sneak behind the airport and fulton the truck asap.
>Whistle for D-Horse and leave the hot-zone.

For this mission I had a really hard time as well. What I did was the sneaking behind airport thing right at the start of the mission with the D-walker. Even extracting the truck was hard because Skulls kept popping the balloon. So what I did was scout the area to look for the fastest exit route, parked my D-walker just at the exit, sneak to the truck, skip the cinematic, get noticed by the kulls and ran behind the large building next to them. Then I ran back to the truck, extracted it before the Skulls caught up to me then ran to the D-walker, called a halicopter and D-walked in circles until it got there and then extracted. I didn't have any battle-oriented gear but it can definitively help.

If it wasn't for the wormhole skulls would've broken the fulton, and you need to at least finish mission 31 to get the wormhole, also the stealth uniform could be max level for all I know, so that video proves nothing

I actually found it easier to let the truck leave the airport and intercept it on the road. That way it's away from any other soldiers. If you have any mines you can use those to destroy or trap the lead apc. I like to carry an LMG to just burst down the skulls when they spawn. You could also try a Launcher if you don't have mines, as a Launcher will also be okay versus the skulls. Just make sure you move the fight away from the truck!

If you have captured vehicles you can also bring them into the mission. Ramming skulls with an apc or shooting them with the 20mm gun works well.

Later on you have to do missions with literally no gear.
Trick is for this mission, you don't actually need to fight.

Just have to get the convoy out.
Best way to do that is to attack convoy wen it is right outside the airport, shoot out the tires. Once the Skulls appear the APCs become neutralized.

Then cargo the convoy, jump into a tank and drive as far as possible before skulls destroy it.

Then just run the rest of the way.

That's what I was forgetting! The apcs are knocked out once the convoy goes down. You don't even have to destroy them. I think I stopped the convoy outside the airport with a decoy. Just enough to get close to the truck, which triggers the skulls. Shooting the tires sounds good too though.

You can still take out the skills by ramming with the apc and finishing them with an LMG though. Especially if you distract them with decoys.

I'm really happy I lucked out on this one. I followed the mission as you're supposed to, getting the intel and following the route. I ended up arriving at a group of guys waiting along the route and as I was taking them out, the convoy showed up. The knocked out guys stopped the caravan and I extracted the truck and then triggered the Skulls cutscene. I quickly got into the tank/APC thing and blew them away. Somehow got an S rank.

This was my first (technically second after having played it a few years ago) time playing it, so no special gear or high level gear. More luck than anything and some stealth.

theres a mission quite a bit later on where you have to kill the skulls in that same airport but they cant go indoors so you should just find a place to hide and let quiet do all the work. so no, there is not another mission as oddly overpowered and underlevelled as this.
