basically, Sam shows up in a cutscene, the mission handler remarks that he looks older, Sam states they don't make them like him anymore, then makes a comment along the lines of 'there's this other guy, army infiltration, wore a bandana?' and the handler comments that she heard he finally retired. Sam thens says 'then it's only me?' as he drops into a full-on thousand yard stare, sounding really caught off guard as he says it.
It's actually really sad, because I've personally seen that look before on a veteran's face. I was in the room when he heard that one of the guy's he'd served with back in vietnam (they were a chopper crew, iirc), the last one still around, had passed. Poor dude just went 'huh', then stared off into space for a few minutes.
