Why does everyone refer to you as Boss
even if you're playing another character?

Because... they don't know who you really are?

What do you mean?

I'm talking about when we're using characters from the Combat Unit.

Is there something I'm missing?

They didnt record alternative voice overs for different characters.

The Idea is that nobody really knows who Big Boss really is, but they know of the legend very well.

For Diamond Dogs, seeing Big Boss is kind of like a "You know him when you see him" type thing.

I think.

So what you're saying is that "Big Boss" is not actually the character we play as, but an idea? That's why they all refer to the random dudes that enter and leave the chopper as Big Boss?

if you havent yet completed the story you sir are in for a rather pleasant surprise.
He means if you choose to play as one of your staff instead of "you", as your own character.
I just assume you (Venom Snake) put a guy in charge as the "Boss" so everyone does that. Probably they didn't just record voicelines for other people.

because this time the game was too big too handle with the given time and budget. Yeah, should have changed speeches for when you play as staff

As some have already said, you need to finish the game first, as fully explaining the reasoning behind why everyone refers to you as this is still a major spoiler.

The game is just designed to assume you play Big Boss, it doesn't recognize you playing as a staff character.

I'm pretty sure there's a secondary reason to it that's associated with the twist at the end of the game.
Like I said before, he means when you play as a staff member, such as the female staff. Since the character you made can't be female with the base game,If you play as a female staff member, they will still call you boss, even thought you aren't.

I know. The twist still ties in to that, female staff member or not. So I'll just say it here:

[SPOILERS]

At the end of the game, you find out Venom Snake is not the real Big Boss and that he's really just a representation of the player. "Anybody" can be Big Boss given the time and training. Since it's a representation of the player, and because "anybody" can be molded into Big Boss, any staff member chosen by the player as the soldier to deploy as "becomes" Big Boss in a sense. That's why no matter what character you pick, you're still referred to as "Boss."

You could try to say that it was budget constraints, but seeing as how there were tons of unused voice lines, I highly doubt that that is the case.

Every staff on base knows what their leader looks like, and they actually do react to the fact you find out who you are.
That they greet the other staff as Big Boss is just technically convenient.
The reactions would be funny though, you'd hit a staff and they start beating you up, they would ignore you like the other guards when walking past and wouldn't salute.

Yeah, I know, I just think that the fact that everyone refers to you as "Boss" no matter what is too convenient. I definitely feel that that was something that was planned for. After all, in Peace Walker there WAS a distinction depending on who you played as, but you were playing as the real Big Boss in that one.
