What are hammets?
In MGS2, Emma at one point mentions that the GW AI has a parallel prosessing capacity of 980 trillion hammets or something like that. Just what is a hammet? Is it like an actual measurement used in computer industry or was Kojima just making things up as he went along?

What's a "hammet"? Is it a fictional unit of measurement, or does it actually exist?

If I recall correctly, the MGS2 script mentioned that it was a fictional unit designed to make GW's processing capability sound impressive, due to the sheer number given. --Bluerock 13:03, January 13, 2011 (UTC)

I see. So, Kojima basically invented this unit as he wrote the script and called it a day.

It's hard to say if the "Hammet" is actually a fabrication of Kojima-senpai, Hammets in this case refers to the Curtin-Hammet Principle (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Curtin%E2%80%93Hammett_principle).

We're talking about AI, or simulations of brains, Hammets as applied to the subject matter would be the simulation of neurochemical connections within the brain that are used for processing information. For a central AI, it would be similar to processing memories, the key application of GW and the system. It's quite possible that Hammets are a generally accepted byproduct of the concept, it can be applied both to human processors and AI, but is an extremely dark and taboo subject in many regards. Let's not forget Emma's talk on human genes and the scientific communities...or Rose and Jack's discussion about information control within the matrix...
