this link might help but wearing the approprate camo really does help you to stay stealthy.
Wearing grass camo is while hiding in grass gives you a way better camo index than wearing the sneaking suit. The sneaking suit offers no camouflage at all anywhere. It is good for muffling your footsteps (slient crouchwalking) and at higher grades offers improved healing and damage resistance.
Check my guide for all the fatigues available in-game: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=783825237
Other way around. Correct camo only reduces detection range while moving.
What platform do you play this game?
You'd be better off asking on gamefaqs MGSV PS4 board then. That board has lots of people that knows a bunch about this game.
Contact range is the same while being still, regardless of camo or lack thereof. 9 meters for crouching or prone staying still. While moving, camo takes effect. 25m for crouch walking without camo, 15m with camo.
I forgot most offline stuff, but if you have the Naked Snake fatigue, that is good for both Afghanistan and Africa except airports and bases. Of course, you can use whatever you like since this game's camo system is binary. Either no camo or camo. Stealthing with battle dress or sneaking suit is possible while having a nice backup plan.

I'll just give a rough numbers
standing still -100
running -120
crouching 50
crouch walking 30
lay down / prone 80 / 90
crawling 70
firing loud weapon -150
Also the AI only can see you upper body, slightly above the chest all the way to the head, so you will only need to hide that area. Example: you are standing behind something and your forehead is visible to AI and they could spot you in distance, because you are standing and having negative camo index.
First the camoflauge is not binary, it has a % tied to it and it can go negative!
Second the distance is not always the same, but entirely relies on the camoflauge index (%) you have (standing still, running, crouching, etc... all make a difference).
It makes a huge difference to use effective camoflauge on the environment you are, you can crawl up close to the enemy without getting spotted at all with the right camuflage while getting spotted 60m away with the wrong camoflauge.
The camoflauge is pretty easy to understand to anyone who played MGS III, since the system is similar only we don't have direct access to the index now (at least not without mods).
Worn camo is binary. Either you have camo bonus or don't. The "camo index" is dependent on posture, movement and whether or not the camo bonus applies.
Any MGS veteran knows that the camo system in this game is different from 3, 4 and PW. There is no nuance like in the previous games. Either you have camo bonus or don't. Nor is there a difference in detection range while still. Also, MG fans know that camo is a relatively new concept since MG, MG2, MGS, and MGS2 only had cardboard boxes and disguises.
If you have 95% camo index in MGS3, the soldier has to be right in front of you to detect you while being still. At 75%, soldiers detect you farther away. Not in this game. It's always 9m crouched or prone while still.
Standing still, detection at 45m. Regardless of camo.
Crouching sill, detection at 9m. Regardless of camo.
Prone still, detection at 9m. Regardless of camo.
Stealth mode, detection at 7m. Regardless of camo.
-Unlike in previous games, "camo index" doesn't affect the detection range while still.
-Higher "camo index" decreases the detection range while moving.
-Posture changes "camo index"
-Correct camo adds "camo index"
These are the reasons why in this game, crouch walking or frog cancelling is the best way to use the applied camo bonus. Unlike previous MGS games with a camoflage system, where moving prone was the best way to use camo.
That's because in this game guards' cone of vision is narrower and longer than MGS3, 4 and PW.
If you move in a standing posture, they can spot you from far away. If you were next to them, they can't see you since they have narrow vision. The game is balanced by giving guards better hearing range compared to MGS3, 4 and PW for close range encounters.
More over, GZ and TPP has a different camo system. In GZ we can only use the GZ sneaking suit, so the camo index fluctuates depending on carried gear. If you carry a large back weapon, the detection range is worse. This doesn't happen in TPP.
