Can you take soldiers with you?

I've been playing this game for a bit, and as i understand your character is trying to build a personal army, but the most i seem to be ablt to access of that army is a helecopter. Can i request support soldiers, or other kinds of support? If so how? If not, is there a mod that allows that or something?

yes, you can use the sniper support. but she's one of the skulls..

You can play as any soldier so long as they are in the combat unit. I don't recall when that starts though.

After expanding his base and built his first combat platform I think.

No.
Only support are helicopters and buddies which includes Quiet aka sniper

There are also several bombardment types you can call on from the idroid too.
