The pistol is for the last portion of the boss fight... don't want to spoil it but you'll know it when you see it.
Other than that just keep moving. His whip strike is really easy to avoid. His machine guns do almost no damage... flamethrower is almost unavoidable if you're close but it won't kill you. The attack to watch out for is when he jumps on top of a mountain and starts aiming with his railgun... just hide behind something until he's done firing. I got lucky and he mainly shot at Quiet lol. Whatever you do DO NOT go out into the open when he's aiming because you will die.
P.S. I agree the boss fight is kind of ridiculous since it's supposed to be a stealth game... reminds me of Deus Ex before they fixed the boss fights. They were all combat and quick time events even though the whole rest of the game was stealth. But... wouldn't be Metal Gear without fighting a giant robot in a field.
Here are a couple of tips:
You can destroy the rock spikes it creates with ordinary assault rifle fire. Very usefull for escaping before he jumps on you.
There is a tank, rocket artillery and a LAV in the area. If you can drive them decently, you can do a lot of damage before it uses the attack where it destroys all vehicles.
Only thing you could have problem with is when it decides to go sniping. Quite often you won't have any cover, so just run like Sanic and dodge-jump.
And take Quiet with you with damaging rifle. Tranq rounds do not work because guess why.

If you really want to cheese it, use placeable explosives. 1 AT mine and put groups of 4 C4 (or more) in single locations. wait for him to walk over them, kaboom. You also have the option to manually detonate if needed. Cheesiest win ever.jpg. I'd suggest playing a deadly game of ring around the rosey around one of the large stone pillars in the area.
If you're still not able - just farm up more material and GMP and just research max AT, bring vehicles, Max pequod (i'd use rocket pods for higher dps), then roll in and spend 100k on your deployment cost. Literally just go battle armor + spam rockets, i'd be pretty surprised if you died. The way to die in the battle is to prolong it - you wanna dump all your ordinance asap, then get reloading and resupplying. Learn the attack timing, you'll be alright. all mgs bosses have the same pattern of attacks once you've figured them out and the range/HP% that they trigger at.
Its called Metal Gear. You actually fight a Metal Gear in every Metal Gear game. Just this Metal Gear fight is worse than every other in the MGS series. The other ones are actually good. in MGS4 u get to fight Metal Gear Ray vs Metal Gear Rex. The 2 most iconic Metal Gears in the series. Its a pretty stupid fight in this one and kills 2 bosses in a really stupid way.
Felt a little cheesy, honestly. Only took about 2 minutes to kill it.
