METAL GEAR SOLID V: THE PHANTOM PAIN

So many near-useless items and gadgets lol
Aside from a very few sets of missions that require them, did you guys notice that many gadgets and items you get are nearly useless?

I mean think about it. Smoke grenade=Will put enemies on alert. Stun grenade=Makes too much noise. Molotov=Too much noise. Optic Camo=A-rank restriction. Frag Grenade=Too much noise. Phantom Cigar=Aside from free roaming, it takes up too much time and will lead to a lower rank. Sleeping Grenade=Enemies can run away and it makes a lot of noise. C4=Too much noise most of the time.

Learn to use C4 properly. You don't put it on objects. You put it on guards. It sticks to their backs.

Yes of course. And then you blow em all up to take away your no-kills bonus, along with your subtlety.

Smoke grandes: What did you expect? It's still a soft alert. The same for stun grenades, petrol bombs and frag grenades. Optic camo meaning stealth camo? Of couse it will lower your score, It isn't to get better score but to get tasks easily done, side ops, etc. Phantom cigar can be used while free roaming or side ops without lowering the scores. Sleeping grenades as the same effect as smoke grandes, it doesn't make noise, they see the smoke. They run yes, what did you expect? You can take some if you aim direct for them and C4, as far as I know there's no surpressed C4 of course it will make noise and it will trigger a soft alert also. Meaning you can do those things without being seen, from a far or hidding spot. Useless for some, some are creative and loves to experiment another ways to play.

Not really. I just thought it was funny to notice that so many gadgets trigger soft alerts in a stealth game :D

For a play anyway you fkn want to play game!!!!

...and I whole heartedly disagree with your assessment. Stealth is only one option of many. Other than the A-Rank restricting items that I'll agree with you on, most everything you mentioned is useful and fun to play with.

Step outside of your little stealthy box every now and then.

I'd say some items are situational

Smoke grenades - not everyone goes for full on clean run, I use them to create a confusion or to distract guards. If you throw few of them defender will be a bit out of his confort zone, also guards will look the way so throwing it on other side of the deck can work like a charm instead of wasting sleep grenade.

Petrol Bombs - great weapon against defenders, it somewhat blocks one way for him so using it in tight areas can be very good.

Optic camo kind of makes sense to have rank restriction, C4 is something I do not use a lot, Hand Grenades are much more of use for me against defenders.
Sleep Grenades are awesome if you use them on hotspots.

Well a player with some imagination can use all of them depending of the situation, in fact I use most of them when I'll need it, also I usually use the lowest rank of an item when I can because of the deployment cost and even if I can use a better item I still manage to use low cost item the best way I can, it's just items that favor your playstyle just like a heavy machinegun does not go too well with my playing style, zam.

EDIT: Almost no items are useless, zam.

Stealth camo is good for clearing out mission objectives. Stun, smoke, petrol bomb and sleep grenades come in handy for FOBs. Phantom cigar has a few situational uses like the Back Up, Back Down mission if you need to skip to the end. You can use Frags and C4 for earlier missions but yeah they do become pretty obsolete later on.

The only weapons that are really useless are the ones you can't make custom versions of that have better counterparts, like the Molotok and a lot of the missle launchers. Everything else you can at least use their parts for other weapons.

Honestly, as far as grenade types go, smoke grenades are definitely my go-to, personally. I mean, they basically disorient and sort of 'stun' the enemy long enough for you rush in, grab one of the guards so you've a human shield to escape with by the time the smoke clears, throwing everything in your favor without mistakenly putting yourself to sleep in the process or actually killing one of them if you're trying not to for whatever reason.

. . . And they're great for sort of blocking a sniper's field of view in MGO. :| I wish that worked in the single player though, but the fact that the guards remain standing with regular smoke grenades makes all the difference for the human shield-ing.

because when stealth fails it is not game over, that's where the fun is - from breathing quietly to guns blazing

Most missions will let you S-rank them just fine with a cigar or two. Smoke grenades are basically an invisibility cloak with their only cost being a soft-alert, which doesn't actually ruin a no-alert run. There's an early mission you can S-rank in about two minutes using a single smoke grenade. If you smoke someone then smoke everyone who saw the smoke before they can find cover and use their radio, you won't even get a soft-alert. Ditto if nobody can see the smoke anyway. Combined with some magazines or knocks to set people up it's incredibly powerful. Trip over a pan and draw the final defender towards your hostage-pile? Smoke. Need to fulton someone in a firefight? Smoke. Heavy Troopers? Smoke. Tank in the way? Smoke it. Snipers? Smoke yourself.

I think the only thing that can possibly upstage the smoke grenade is probably the rocket-fist, and even that has trouble with tanks. Or the cardboard box, but comparing anything to the raw power of the box is unfair. Sometimes I really wish I had some C4 so I could destroy comms equipment, but outside of those moments I don't really miss it. Molotovs are incredibly situational, and the situations are pretty rare.

It's certainly very strange how many distraction tools one has access to in the game, and their relative power compared to everything else.
