will it hurt my computer?
Programs don't hurt computers, people do. Programs can only do what they're told.
Here is the best option for MGS1 on PC. Your best bet for 2/3 is emulation
https://github.com/VFansss/mgs2-v-s-fix/wiki
As for 3, you COULD emulate it, but I advise against it. MGS3 currently has this problem where certain textures don't look correct to the point of being distracting. You'll also need a pretty decent rig to run it at 1080P 60FPS without a ton of frame drops. And 4, as you said, is currently impossible to emulate, but you do have two options:
1: Buy a PS3.
2: Get a subscription to the PlayStation Now service (this will also allow you to play MG1, MG2, MGS2, MGS3, and MGS Peace Walker in HD), however, you need an internet download speed of AT LEAST 10Mb/s and I recommend much higher than that.
At that point just buy the HD collection for $30 or so instead
That is indeed what I would do as well, but OP wants a way to play the games on PC, so I gave the second option.
Totally spaced that it was even available on PC
Yeah, the PSNow service is available on PC and PS4, which is really just Sony's excuse to not make the PS4 backwards compatible with PS3 games, I think.
MGS3 is not that hard to setup, you need to download some BIOS collection and try all till you find one that is working. Once I've found the proper one I had no problems with the game.
Sure did look bad befor ethat tho but it's not rocket science to load different BIOS files and start the game
It's not hard, but it can be tedious, and OP said that they're new to this. Plus, with emulation you don't get the pressure sensitive buttons, which are pretty important in 3. Also the uncompressed textures in the HD collection are nice lol. But yeah, you're right, looks like the emulation has come quite a ways for 3 since I last tried to set it up.
Yeah but emulation can cost a lot more than a console does.
Just don’t make the mistake of using a shady site to get the games and you’ll be fine. If you have the actual disc copies, I believe the emulator will be able to read them without you needing to illegally download some ROM
Edit: damn it, Death and LCDR tricked me into necroposting
The reason emulating an old PlayStation game can be so demanding when, in retrospect, the hardware that originally ran it was so old, is because both hardwares were made with different tasks in mind.
You have to remember that while a console and a PC are both computers, a PC does way, WAY more than a console is capable of, and uses hardware that wasn’t made with those specific games in mind.
Anyways, as long as you have a decent CPU and GPU, you shouldn’t have too many issues.
Edit: to clarify, your CPU is more important than the GPU when it comes to emulation
