Intro video annoyance
I'm having a minor annoying issue with the intro videos in the game - when they play, the screen will be blank and I just have to click through them. Any ideas as to how I can get them working again? Perhaps disabling them entirely and going straight to the main menu would be okay as well, if anyone knows how to do this for this game.

Specs:

GPU: GeForce GTX 1080 (MSI GAMING X PLUS) @ Stock
CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 1700X @ Stock
RAM: 32GB @ 2933 MHz 16-16-16-39 w/ minor subtiming tweaks
Storage: 1TB Samsung 960 EVO + 3TB Toshiba P300 HDD ( Game is installed on the HDD )

You can turn off intro video inside rise2.ini file by swapping the 0 into a 1.

Default location:
C:\%USERPROFILE%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft Games\Rise of Nations\rise2.ini

Right click the file, select open with, then select notepad, then go to SkipIntroMovies=0 and change it into SkipIntroMovies=1, then save and exit

RESTORE
Or open steam, click games in top menu, View Games Library, then right click rise of nations (left side) properties, go to the tab local files and select "Verify integrity of game files..."
Hopefully that will restore your movie files, that seem to be corrupted or empty?
Or can you play the movies from the installation folder without problems?

Default:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Rise of Nations
then there is for example:
...\art\opening.wmv
...\skybox_intro_1920.wmv
...\ms_game_studio's_1M.wmv

If the movies don't play from the installation folder then either the files could be corrupted, or you need to install codec pack for playing .wmv (which i really doubt).

For me it's same problem, since installing and uninstalling a rollback.

I've tried a few graphics drivers, including DDU for clean uninstall, been a lingering problem for a while now

What's bothering me is the eyesore black flashing screens I have to click through to get to the main menu.

I think that in game's files there is some configuration file in which you can (by notepad) turn the intro cinematic off, but I don't remember which.
The author of this thread has indicated that this post answers the original topic.

Cheers, I was wondering where this file was because it isn't in the usual places for this game but I found it in C > Users > [My user] > AppData > Roaming > microsoft games > rise of nations

I swapped a 0 to a 1 next to "SkipIntroMovies" and it now skips the noisy black screens.

Oh, seems like you made your comment more specific at the same time as I was typing. Thanks!

When it comes to those videos, they are in the RoN folder and I can play them with the "Films & TV" Windows app but they don't play in-game. Anyway the game does feel slicker coming in & out without the intros (though on the other hand they are nostalgic)

I had the same problem, I found a simple solution for being able to watch those intro videos when you open the game. Just go to
"YourDrive:\...\Steam\steamapps\common\Rise of Nations", find the "riseofnations.exe" file, right click on it, then click Properties and in the Compatibility tab, Settings and enable Reduced color mode with the 8 bits (256) option, Apply and Accept.

Done!
