I can see benefit in leveling all characters too, in that once you get several unique abilities inhereted from all characters you'll be able to customise your skill build completely, like Punker Rock pointed out with abilities like Shield and Evade Cancel, that can be rather useful. In that regard, I'd recommend going after Jill's Evade Time and Evade Distance abilties too.
Saying that Hunk and Barry is the best combo .
and don't pick Jill she has like dodge skills that don't really make any difference .
I might stick with her, get her Hunk stealth, her smoke bomb, she's got Weskers Evade-cancel and all her points so far have gone into her revolver skill.
If you quit a raid attempt you still get the EXP for it
I assume the same applies if you die on an attempt
so there is no need to use crystals just to level up
