That's true from a story perspective, but if you look at the gameplay of the older games zombies played a core part in the slow paced haunting atmosphere which was amazing in it's own right but also served to enhance the moments when you encountered those deadly killing machines like hunters or the tyrants. Nowadays everything is fast paced and the focus is more on kill everything ASAP which has killed off whatever uniqueness the series had going for it.
They're a direct port of enemies from RE6. Honestly, if you want your dose of 'zombies', RE6 is likely the last and only decent way in which to get that dose... And sadly, they're only one faction of enemies in the game (other stories focusing more on OTT BOW's - and variations of Ganados from RE4).
I can mostly live with the 'almost human' type infected that can mutate - but when enemies all become a clusterflip of deranged/deformed walking flesh that can turn into flying lumps of poo, grow boney-chainsaw arms, or can fit a whole eye-ball-dinosaur in a human body, it really loses the plot.
I'm also hoping for the day it all goes back to 'slow, shambling undead' (RE-1 slow-paced claustrophobic horror style -- my favourite), but it's not likely to happen anytime soon.
What your saying and agree is that in the later games like RE6 its not explained well like it was simply in earlier games. Whats missing today is ANY explanation how any of it happens or why? Miss the easy days of blaming the evil corporation, they really gotta revisit that storyline and lose the BSAA stuff because it was never explained well no matter how many games/movies they make.
Example: Oh no Burkin injected himself with a mutatagenic virus hes mutating!!!!
Problem Capcom has is that if you kept all games to the glorious RE1 format, you'd NEED enemies that are (mostly) slow because they're what make the claustrophobic element work - which makes enemies hard to progress in terms of threats.
If you bombarded players with 100% Hunters or Dogs in RE1, or any fast-freak from a recent RE title, it's too in your face to be that scary and wrecks tensions, so it takes the 'shooter' style so players can keep up. Some like it, some hate it. I'm in the middle as I've enjoyed RE4-5-6 despite wanting a return to RE1 form. In RE1, when Hunters/Dogs are introduced after adapting to zombies, that's scary - and when the Tyrant starts walking slowly towards you, pants will be shat -- it's the buildup, which doesn't exist in any recent RE.
The only thing tying any of the games together at this point are the old characters and any mention of 'virus' - that's the only explanation anyone will get because it's too far gone to contain or make sense of - and I don't see the point in trying.
Only reason I invest in recent RE's these days in the sub-content primarily - because when you clock 600+ Hrs in NoMercy Mercenaries in RE6, and thoroughly enjoy Mercenaries in RE5-4-3 and even the sub-games of RE2, more than the main game, it can make it all worth it.
Revelations = Raid Mode, with optional modes for Campaign - that'll keep me going just fine. I'll be curious to see how the story goes, sure, but you won't get no explanations for anything.
And now that I look at this new "Raid mode" and I find out that there is this new "Red Queen Alpha" ....I would assume that maybe they still want to keep to that same "Evil corporation angle"....Only now it's more of a "Terrorist group - Cult"?
(Most probably a cult in this case. If memory doesn't betray me here, even the "original" Corporation only served the purpose of creating a new order out of the infected and the mutations... With Spencer in charge of everything. Maybe there would still be those crazy enough in wanting the creation of a world filled with monsters... Following the ideas of their now deceased "ex-leader").
Even in the first video of this game you get to see all of these "Hunk-like" soldiers who quickly storm the facility and kidnap Claire\Moira and the others...
I think they may just try to introduce the concept of "Neo-U" further with this game and possibily we will hear more of it all in RES7...
I feel that even if there is going to be "more explanations".... The plot is still going to be very cheesy and sometimes absurd or cartoonish... Even "badass" in that same style.
More or less the standards of RES as per usual (This is still my opinion however, As some people might think that the plot is better than just that).
It's never going to make a whole lot of sence and it's never going to be some "shakespear" type of story... But honestly? I came exactly for the cheap zombie action and the silly yet sometimes very colorfull plot.
