yes, because they are a part of singleplayer campaign
you may skip the last two (little Miss and Struggle), but first three are essential for completing the game
You need at least the four main episodes to play the full story, so buying Ep. 2, 3 and 4 is essentially a must (each of these episodes also unlock more Raid Mode stages each)
The two extra episodes: Little Miss and The Struggle, are lower quality and skippable, they don't add much to the experience.
Oh I forgot Episodes 2, 3 and 4 are actually sold as DLC...
