Where do I find a speel book?

Hi, Love the looks of this game, but wondered of anyone has played it on Steam Deck and is it possible (or will it be possible) to play using a game pad?

I explored the whole level but the exit stairs are still locked. I know I am missing something but no idea at all. Any ideas?
