Retail version resolution max was 1280x1024 (4:3), I don't know if it's upgraded in the steam version.

Nope, of course not.

You'd think they could at least fix that.

You can override manually:

Non-4:3 resolutions are not supported natively, but the game does support custom resolutions all the way up to 1440x1080.

I got the game up to 2560x1440p. Its streched on my 16:9 monitor but does not look too distorted.

Not sure if you'll get a notification on this, but I'd like to know exactly how you did this, because I've been unable to so far.
