Some help and tips for this game?
Hey everyone! So I just started playing this game, and I can say so far that this game is awesome. Now, I need some help, like beginner's guide on how to play this game because there are some things that are unexplained (for me) like what's the purpose of gas mask filters, etc. I'd be glad if you're all willing to help a newbie here. Thanks! :D:

the first thing to know is that you rarely need rush in this game. NPCs, for example, wait for you, they do not disappear. Exploring and listening to conversations pays dividends in terms of supplies and ammo, including military rounds which are the currency in the game. The conversations in and of themselves provide tips. You can make choices as well, like taking stealth approachs rather thasn always rushing in and shooting it out. The gas mask and filters are needed on the surface and selected other areas and the short answer is they save you from dying!

Gas masks and filters will keep you alive when you are outside, collect as many filters as possible.

Oh, but may I ask again about when do you have to change gas mask filters?

When filter runs out, you will begin to cough and sputter to tell you to change filter.....

Search for supplies everywhere and always; listen to NPC conversations for lore and secrets (often leads to supplies); play the game as YOU actually would in that situation; and lastly, you don't have to kill ANYONE if you don't want to :mllrM:
The biggest advice anyone can give is pay attention.
It's not like some regular shooter, where the people around you will say stuff you can ignore.
Listen to what people say, and remember.

The filter situation will be explained, as will pretty much everything else.
Anything you might miss you will maybe see in a loading screen tip, or in the menu tips at the bottom of the screen.

Now, in terms of gameplay advice, from someone here who rates 2033 as the best game ever made (the original version, not redux, though redux is right up there), all I can suggest is go slow, look around, don't be scared to search even if you think you are running low on filters on the surface. A bit of exploration is likely to solve that problem for you.
Be careful when people are around, they are your biggest problem most of the time. Take a rifle and a shotgun, make sure you have throwing knives, and you can get through most human area's without being spotted if you're slow and methodical.
Mutants, use your shotgun and keep moving.
Librarians (you will know when you meet them), just do what they suggest you do with some large mammals. Stare him down, don't look away and don't run. If you break your gaze with him and he charges, start moving and use shotgun and throwing knives as fast as possible. But you should be able to get through without killing any if you are careful and stare them down.

If you get stuck on any particular section, or want tips on anything in general, post back I will try to help.

Good luck in the metro stranger

There is a dedicated button press to bring up your watch. If you are playing spartan it will be digital and will show exactly how many minutes/seconds you have left on your current filter.
If you're playing survival if will show hands with a red/amber/green section, showing you how much time you have. Obviously reading digital is easier, but the regular watch is more challenging, and obviously more believable for the setting.

But the other post is correct, you will cough and sputter when it runs out. Then just press the key to change.
I believe on spartan he will change automatically anyway, but I'm not 100% positive on that because I only played survival.

Although I have been playing Assassin's Creed lately, I've been used to having a radar and some visible HUD in the game. Metro 2033 isn't much new to me since the game is also similar with Dishonored (which I played 3 years ago). I'm playing Spartan right now since I'm still new to the game.

Also, yours has the most explanation, so huge thanks to you for helping a newb here! Cheers! :happy_creep:

You are very welcome, glad to help a new metro survivor.

As I said, it's my favourite game of all time. Original metro 2033 I mean. This is second, then last light redux.

If there is anything else you are curious about or stuck on, just post back here and I'll try to help

I played Metro 2033 in 2012 in simple mode, now playing the redux version in hard mode: now I know that I have to play it in a very stealth mode, and it's a very beautiful and immersive game! (even if it has a good looking but not GPU optimized...)

Playing it on stealth mode is the best!
Just remember that in the redux, like in last light, you can go non-lethal as well. Either by just sneaking past and leaving enemy alone, or by pressin the "use" key instead of the melee key. This will knock them out rather than stab them.
