Did Artyom's Mom Live in the Metro?

According to one of his diary entries, he lived in the metro with his mom until the station they were at was attacked by rats and she later died. However, the metro last light live action video shows her not even being able to get into the metro and giving up Artyom as a baby. So am I interpreting this wrong or what? Which one is canon?

The game has some flaws story wise for instance the ending on metro 2033 where you can send the nukes or not send them, I did not nuke the mutants home but when I started metro last light the story suggested I had done which I thought would have been better if it had know I did not, it would have made the story continuation better for me personnally.

According to the book, she lived in the metro with Artyom at a station towards the top of the ring which was overtaken by rats, Artyom escaped, she didn't.
