Metro 2033 Redux Crashing to Desktop. Workaround/fix
Hi everyone,

I found a workaround for everyone that is crashing to the desktop with the REDUX version of metro.

Initially, I would play for never longer than 3 minutes before I crashed in the dead city.

I tried:
Reinstalling EVERYTHING, Windows, game, Direct X, C++, Net-framework, Altered TDR registry values, disabled my overclock, turned off phys X, turned of Tessellation.

Nothing worked.

What I did:

1. Turned all setting to low, AF 16X and Tessellation and Phys x OFF.

Result: no crash after 30 minutes.

2. Turned PhysX ON and Tessellation set to max/very high.

Result: Crash like before.

3. PhysX OFF and tessellation Max, then high, then normal.

Result: All crashed.

4. PhysX ON and Tessellation OFF.

Result: NO CRASH

5. SSAO set to 2x/auto.

Result: Immediate crash after loading screen.

6. Graphics set to MEDIUM

Results: CRASH

7. Graphics set to HIGH

Results: CRASH

Conclusion: Using the settings; Native resolution, PhysX = ON, AF = 16X, Tessellation = OFF, SSAO = OFF, Graphics Settings = LOW, my game DOES NOT crash in the Dead City at all!!

Final thoughts: Why do you want to play the Redux version? Usually four main reasons.

1. DX11 and the accompanying Tessellation
2. PhysX
3. Great Graphics (VeryHigh).
4. They resahded a lot of the lighting which looks better.

In my Opinion. It is still worth playing the redux edition on the settings I listed because 1. the low graphic setting does surprisingly little to the image quality, 2. Physx still makes things seem lively. 3. the only compromise I noticed was with Tessellation on the ground textures where some building debris looked flatter. 4. The lighting still looks very similar.

Overall, I think that these settings actually don't look noticeably worse than max settings but I think 4A games need to fix this and that it was lazy coding.

PS: I had my GPU overclocked the entire time!

4. PhysX ON and Tessellation OFF.

Result: NO CRASH

this is what i did. before i had crashes every 4min, now i was able to play 30min, till i come to the frist outside area, here it crashes again everytime, before i reach the next checkpoint, so i can not make any progress at all.

EDIT: i changed my settings from 3440x1440 to 1920x1080 and i had no crash the last 20min.i will write an update if i have an other crash.

Set your metro.exe files properties, compatibility..

Run in admin mode.

-Set to "vista (Service pack 2)"

-Change High DPI settings: High DPI Scaling Override to "Application"

Worked for me

It is working for me as well. Played for about an hour and no crashes yet (runing metro.exe instead of running it from steam)

Edit: Nah, it is still crashing. I am in chapter 6 but it has been soooooo annoying getting here.
