The 'shoot the laser' ending is the non-canon, 'Golden Ending' where-in peace reigns, happiness is as glowing as the radiation, everybody gets a lollypop, and yadda-yadda.
Snark aside, it's pretty sweat & satisfying so I'd recommend reloading a save and seeing it since you've unlocked it already. .
Spoiler details: Don't read if you're planning on playing Last Light! It basically represents Artyom having a big enough heart and having grown enough during his journey (via those bright flashes, representing positive experiences, and the hushed, dimmed moments being negative, closed off experiences), to forgive Hunter's death, his station's suffering, and live & let live with that a tragic miss-understanding happened but further tragedy got averted.
Needless to say... Last Light deals HEAVILY with all that not happening, the big tragic boom that killed about the only nice mutants on the whole surface, and Artyom/others wrestling with having to live with that kerfuffle.
So.. yeah. Sweat & neat, but non-canon.
So am I correct that the only differences is that you either shoot the terminal or shoot the monster? Or is there some other difference?
(I just reloaded, and shot the terminal this time. And saw the other ending.) So my question is still if this is the only difference? Like just that one choice.
Also, I don't understand what incentive I could have for shooting the terminal. Your rant is incorrect. It just doesn't seem to make sense according to the story. Since the start Dark Ones have been threatening us. They seem to be sending all those mutated creatures. Also, they seem to be attacking us personally. Just like that squad that got killed in Exhibition, and Hunter had to leave. I thought that was the Dark Ones. Killed everybody, and left. Not to mention all the crap they were doing to my brain and harassing me psychically. All that was weird hostile ♥♥♥♥. Nothing to suggest they are friends so that I should shoot the terminal. Everything suggests they're hostile monsters.
You need a certain amount of 'karma points,' I think the game calls them in the engine. Basically, all those little flashes with a sound sting you've gotten over the whole game.
Enough of those? You're allowed to get the good ending. Not enough? You can only get the 'bad' ending.
Hope that helped.
Edit* Oh, and about the Dark Ones? Artyom is partially immune to their telepathy... but other people weren't.
So the Dark Ones weren't intentionally hostile, they just... basically melted peoples brains by trying to say 'Hello,' got horrified, and went away. But the humans wanted revange/destroy the threat, and they first tried to negotiate peace via Artyom, and once that fails, defend themselves.
So... it's one of those both sides are wrong, both sides are right thing. The Dark Ones aren't hostile... but they're still a horrific threat. That sort of thing.
Throughout '2033' the dark ones show Artyom images of his mother, of the green world before the war, all positive images, in their attempt to make him understand they want peace. It is only as he approaches the top of the tower that their images become threatening - their 'chosen one' was on his way to destroy them so its only to be expected they'd at least be a bit miffed.
The dark ones are obviously intelligent. In the situation they're in, it could only be to humans' benefit to try to get along with them. Sadly, people of the Metro have suspicion, fear and superstition in sufficient quantity to make peace the furthest thing from their minds.
Except for Artyom.
I got the bad ending on my first trip through '2033', but by then I didn't want it. I just had to watch as the game forced me to destroy them. Since I found out about the 'moral points' system I haven't hit the bad ending again. I only went for it once for 'C'est La Vie' in 'Last Light', too.
I just hope there's a fourth game that deals more with dark ones. And it would be very selfish of Artyom and others if they didn't go back to free the people of the Metro from the paranoid stupidity of Hanza and their jammers. Maybe with the dark ones as allies.
Sorry if that's a spoiler, but there are 'Exodus' videos all over the place and few secrets left.
.
Artyom doesn´t have a "common wire".The dark one waited for a person without prejudice (not exactly the right word) who doesn´t get crazy by the " mind touching " , which comes from the negative experiences of the adult humans.... At least that´s what i believe :D
After reading a few post and clicking a link, its interesting to keep in mind whats what with moral points and how you know you've recieved one, after watching many a gopher video on metro I'm trying to not kill as many without having to , but yet to have see a knockout option pop, ...
So when I get the chance , will try that, and I've seen I can just just e to climb ladders with nothing showing ...
SO I can get the good ending , then once I've learned were to go and whats what, going to try for a bad ending just for a look see..
