Are you on ranger hardcore? If so it won't show the button prompts. Once you are in position you have to lower the crane onto the tentacle that is covering the rods, to get rid of it if I remember correctly.
I'm not exactly sure, but I seem to remember it was left mouse to lower and right mouse to raise. But don't quote me, I'm going on memory here and it's been a while.

Once you lower you have to raise and lower again I think. It takes a few hits on the tentacles to make them back off.

Lower the crane onto the reactor rod's contact head when the computer tells you to.

Theres nothing to do actually. All you have to do is reach to the contact zone untill it says "contact zone reached" thats when you should exactly stop your crane and lower it. It will automatically remove the rod. Nothing to press there.
