An old thread from 2014 has the fix of changing the joystick mapping to wsad configuration.
well, i just started to finally play this game myself, noticed that too... apparently this game has had controller problems even on the consoles... both non-redux and redux. this is the only thing i've tried so far that seems to work(may test more) and @r-kid already mentioned it.
i'm using the PS4 controller, since i mainly run steam in big picture mode(depending on touchiness of the game and certain steam versions) to fully utilize the controller. once in-game. open the steam overlay, go to controller configuration, then the joystick your using for "Joystick move", Style of input>directional pad, then edit it accordingly(e.g. W for up) now for the Layout. if you want to be able to move very slightly when you barely lean that stick, then set layout to Analog Emulation. is what that does it sends pulses of the button to simulate slight movements. ingame it looks like your tapping that button super fast. now if you don't like that layout option, then just set it too "8 way(Overlap)" which will act only as if your pressing the w,s,a,d key's. meaning no slow movements unless manually quick hitting the stick.
So far of my searches many have this problem and VERY few don't and it hasn't mattered on what controller is being used or even software(emulators) used for them. many have tried switching sticks and so on and it still happens. so unless it's a config files needing to be fixed or edited, then it's something in the game we can't mess with unless you get into coding. unsure as of now since i've only just recently started on the game and finally just got irritated of the joystick bug and here i am. many have stated that the devs gave up on the game shortly after the redux editions and from what i've seen and such... yeah don't doubt it so no possible fixes from their end since this is something i've traced pretty far back and hasn't been addressed yet.
so much i can say to this lol. but the NICEST thing i will say to that is... in REALITY it's purely personal preference. so many rip on me about it too, but then we actually get into a game... lol. it's all about what you like to use, more comfortable and how you like to set it up. for me, i usually use to use the PS3 controller with xbox 360 emulations. but now use PS4 controller(don't even have a ps4) since steam is pretty utilized to it. plus for games better using the 360 controller i use ds4windows for that. there is also a usb stick that sony made for the PS4 controllers on PC.
this can work, but sadly not this game lol.
That fix worked for me!
btw, there is an easy fix:
Play FPS games with a keyboard and mouse, you crazy people.
if that doesn't work you can always buy an Xbox 360 controller as that is natively supported. (or an Xbox One controller as they can be found easier and work just as well)
The reason im posting is because when i switched to ORIGINAL MS xbox one ver2 gamepad [the white one with Bluetooth and headphone connector] the problem is no more.
-Right click your Metro 2033 game in Steam Library
-Select Properties
-in the "general" tab you will find a setting called "Steam Input Per-Game Setting"...select "forced off"
problem solved and game works perfectly. I have not tried this with the PS4 controller, but if you have an Xbox One controller I can confirm this works.
Steam's controller support really is horrendous. In many cases, the game does a 10x better job alone.
