Granted, all newer F1 games are more refined and even run better than F1 2015, but let me quote from my review of this game, with the caveat this is merely one person's experience-
"Cars control superbly in F1 2015- better than F1 2012 and F1 2011, and better than Dirt 3 and Grid Autosport. In other words, this is the best experience I have had so far with a controller in a Codemasters game. Overall, the experience with a controller is excellent with this game, and racing in singleplayer mode a joy. A solid 9+ out of 10 for me- it has definitely been one of the most enjoyable racing games I have played."
After F1 2015, I've gone on to play F1 2016 and currently F1 2019. Controller experience is slightly worse on 2016, and more so on 2019. I've also been playing Forza Horizon 4 on PC, and I would rate it below F1 2015 in terms of controller playability, but above 2016 and 2019.
(Edit: I found the controller play with DS4 to be improved in F1 2019, after increasing Steering Linearity under Controller Settings from default of 0 to anything 20 and above. I'll now rate it above F1 2016 in terms of controller play.)
Also a tip for those struggling to enable controller in 2015:
"A simple solution: only plug in the controller when the game announces 'Welcome to F1' and prompts the player to press a button. Plugging in controller any earlier than this point often gives a 'controller not supported' mesage to most players. Other than this, some XBox controller owners also seem to have problems getting detected correctly. I played this game with my DS4 controller, with Steam controller support enabled"
