nope, Familiars will collect drops from whatever location they are in, provided they don't get bonked.

I am not sure of the exacts, but there are ways to speedu p their arrival later on.

you can check the probability of events if you go to the stats screen, and if your mind level is high enough to see events for a certain level, you will see a dropdown option called hint available.

There are certain spells that can help,

Bend the odds (mind spell), time warp event, (time spell) later on you can get something that you can use to alter and make those spells bit more powerful
