You can honestly do it any way you want. Though generally the "optimal" range is between 50-100% per retirement. Though I regularly hit 200-250% just because I'm scrapping the wall every retirement.
As many storylines only become active once you retire, feel free to do so whenever you found a cool one.
Generally I would suggest switching the primary element each run, as your general MPL is also important for your study and ressource speed, and that increases much faster by leveling a new element each time.
I did a few retirements with almost no leveling/expedition progress, just because of storylines I wanted to grab to make runs more convenient.
There is no detriment to many retirements, and generally, when you don't really progress much anymore, the next element level would take a while, and/or you have completed some storylines, just retire, the next run will get you where you retired much quicker.
what causes the mulitplier to do up?
It's explained in the Help section under "Retirement" (the Help section has detailed info about pretty much every mechanic, that's why I'm pointing out here that it's worth reading):
Mainly your highest ever reached MPL (Maximum Primary Level), and secondary the sum of your MPLs across all elements.
Example: You start with all elements on MPL 1. In your first run, you pick fire as primary element, and level it to 10. (The other, non-primary elements have ZERO effect on the multiplier!). Your multiplier increases because your maximum MPL went from 1 to 10, and because the sum of your MPLs increased by +9.
Fire MPL: 10
Water MPL: 1
Air MPL: 1
Earth MPL: 1
Maximum MPL: 10
Sum of MPLs: 13
In your second run you pick water as primary, and level it to 10 as well before retiring. (Again, the level of all other elements doesn't matter) Your multiplier only increases by a little bit, because your Maximum MPL is still 10, but the sum of your MPLs increased by another +9.
Fire MPL: 10
Water MPL: 10
Air MPL: 1
Earth MPL: 1
Maximum MPL: 10
Sum of MPLs: 22
In your third rum you pick fire again, level it to 10 again. Your multiplier doesn't change at all, as neither your maximum MPL increased, nor the sum of your MPLs, since your fire MPL already was at 10.
Fire MPL: 10
Water MPL: 10
Air MPL: 1
Earth MPL: 1
Maximum MPL: 10
Sum of MPLs: 22
In your fourth run you pick fire AGAIN, level it to 20. Your multiplier increases a lot again, because your maximum MPL goes from 10 to 20, and you get +10 in your sum of MPLs.
Fire MPL: 20
Water MPL: 10
Air MPL: 1
Earth MPL: 1
Maximum MPL: 20
Sum of MPLs: 32
In your fifth run you pick air for the first time, and level it to 30. Your multiplier increases by a whole lot, because your maximum MPL goes from 20 to 30, and you get a whopping +29 in your sum of MPLs, since Air MPL started at 1 and is now 30.
Fire MPL: 20
Water MPL: 10
Air MPL: 30
Earth MPL: 1
Maximum MPL: 30
Sum of MPLs: 61
So in conclusion, you'll generally want to pick a new element as primary every run, and when you're through all elements start again with the lowest MPL element to push it up further.
(Unless of course you want to specifically target a certain storyline you found but couldn't solve with your current element setup.)
