Do you have to play the old games?

Just saw the trailer to this game on a youtube video. Looks cool and fun, but do you need to play the old games to understand this? or can i just start with this?

Not really.
There may be a reference here or there and a cameo or two to give same fan service to long time fans, but overall they are separate.

Kind of like say Final Fantasy or Star Ocean. In Star Ocean characters might reference characters from previous games, heck one of the main characters might even be a descendant of previous games characters, however playing the previous game isn't really needed and any information that may be needed will be provided.

There is a reference to 4 in this game but it wont actually matter from what I've seen.

4 is one of the best ones so if u play any of suggest that one and you can get it for 5$ if you look around

There is a 100% reference to 4. They already showed it. Won't spoil it if you haven't watched the previews yet
