no it's not stale. my god that's like saying harvest moon needs to change, cod has to drop guns for swords. that is this genre. don't like don't buy. go play genshin it's free and this game won't sell well cause it doesn't know what it wants to be.
Some fans of the main series will love it, while others will not.
I'm still looking forward to its release, despite of the uncertainty caused by RF5 and its similarity shared with Oceans/ToD judging from the information available right now.

I honestly love the designs, the male main character is SUPER cool looking, and it's something fresh for the series while still having farming and adventuring which IS Rune Factory. And you'll get to fly on a dragon?? Hello????
