I have a few builds that I have done this with and it seems to work pretty good for what we have to work with.
Hope it helps.

Or if you want you can use a hover pad (the GSO single one or ventures--be mindful though that the ventures is rather strong and will easily flip over light techs or frames so best to put it on when you have a somewhat weighty tech ) directly over a wheel (orientation don't seem to matter) to have ground control while in the air. I prefer the GSO hub wheel as it has 5 connection points. The other benefit is it only activates the lifting fans/rotors leaving you to have fans/rotors as the primary thust/movement and steering if you want.
This is a glitch/exploit of sorts and was not an intended mechanic. Thankfully the devs were nice to not fix this as this allows a lot more creative ideas (which they and the userbase like to see), more fun to fly as you don't need to figure out the proper placement of steering boosters which can be a right pain to, and easier control (mainly for heli types) to novices of airtechs.
A gyro helps a lot too if you don't have a balnaced tech and reduces fighting it while flying (i.e. drifting or flipping over too much) May need more based on size of tech.
