How to use Geothermal Generators?

So how exactly do you use them? I guess steaming rocks are the ones with a little black hole after destroyed. But placing generator on it does nothing. And I can't do the campaign mission for it because I destroyed the rocks the guy was standing next to before I got the mission :/

You need to go to the mountains biome, it should have weird looking trees called Salami trees. There, you will find smoky rocks which look like those underwater geysers. Break them open and lots of steam will shoot out. Put the generator directly on and viola, power.

Sadly, Geothermal is almost useless now...

It is not useless. If you have a base in the mountins, and want power all the time, then it is good.

This almost sounds like the autominer mission (desert rocks next to crafty mike) and does not depend on a geothermal reactor. (GSO Autominers to harvest resources, the mountain (red soil) steam vents are used with the GeoCorp Thermal Generator.

Is probably your best solution at this point if crafty mike will not respond to a GSO autominer being placed on the Olite (dark red) seam in the desert nearby.
