How do I use my customised character in online multiplayer?

Bit confused, I customised and saved a character, but when I go to play on multiplayer and am in the lobby, it either gives me the option of one character that I can change the colour of, or it lets me cycle through a bunch of preset ones and pick out of those. How do I actually use the character I made? Thanks.

It sits somewhere in the presets. If you start with the default model you need to go left or right and the 1st one should be your custom model.

Thanks, found it, it doesn't let me use my colour though, even if I use my character, when I get in the game it assigns me a random colour :/ Is that normal?

The color gets determined by whenever you connect to the server, first person to connect gets red, then second gets blue, third green, fourth yellow and so on.
