The easiest way to play with a friend on (PC). This is to connect two gamepads to a (PC) and play with a friend.

Not necessarily. I mean, in that case my friend would have to buy a train or bus ticket for 30-70€, drive all the way to me (or the other way around) and then we could play.
Seems easier via internet connection.

don't know if you're still looking for an answer, but I've tried the same thing for hours today and finally found the solution, so here goes for any lost soul out there:

choose the 'online' category and modify your figure. Press 'space' when finished and then press 'I' (i as in invite), this should open your friendlist. Select your friend and wait for them to accept your request. Once they accept, they should apear on your screen. Hope this helps! :)

btw, the accept button appears in your chat. Press Shift + Tab while in game and then the 'friend & chat' icon in the bottom right corner. Select your friend and accept the request
