The four controllers on 1 receiver were recognized, while the 2 on the second receiver were not, despite working correctly in windows.
Would love to hear if anyone has managed to get this working.
If I remember correctly the problem might be that the Input setting 'Use XInput' is set to On. Setting it Off might solve the 4 controller limit.
I tried disabling it about a month ago. Unfortunately it disabled all of my xbox controllers, and maybe the other ones too (I don't recall). Then again I'm using them over Steamlink, so that may have been a contributing factor.
Hope this infomation helps.

Thanks much, biowolves! I will have to try to dual-boot a linux distro and see if that works as discussed in that forum post.
So I tried this on my Windows10 desktop in lieu of streaming the game to my TV via Steamlink. No more than 4 controllers work for me, as was the case with the Steamlink. I disabled Xinput as you suggested and only my two XBO controllers worked. My wired X360 controllers, Nintendo Switch Pro controller, and even my Steam Controller no longer worked.
Go to Stem bigpicture, then go to options, and then go to controller options then disable the configuration to your controller (if you use a PlayStaton controller, disable configuration for Playstation, if you use a Xbox controller, turn off configuration for Xbox...). No you should open Gang Beast, and go to settings, and input, and disable Xinput. Now you can connect more than 4 controllers to one local game!
This is a wierd thing but it probably fix it later, I think. But this should work fine with all controllers.
You can also have 8 different controllers, because all controllers have the same configuration!!
