Also, I feel the need to stress that I am a campaign man, so I'm judging them primarily on the campaign.
DoW I is real RTS. DoW II is more like an RPG with few squads.
2 was what they call RTT with a semblance of a base.
DoW 3 defo has features from the first. No retreating, units dont seem to level up, elites seem to exp only from the big exp up to 10. Simplified counters but still Im surprised how they made it. I dont like the fixed time-bound thing they call excalation, whole armies wipe. Big pop cap, Lots of potential but didnt quite make it.Gfx-wise units bit too shiny.
dow 1 is very much dated, 2 is a rush around certain points with generators to kill, shallow. Complexy counters, much hidden stuff.. 3 is quite ok but overfocus on boss units making rest no less than cannon fodder or something.
For my personal opinion, Dawn of War 1 was the best. It had:
Good story.
Great built on DLCs.
Balanced units and lots of them.
Highly customizable units, where nobody is useless, yet still expendable.
First basic introduction of the cover system.
Melee combat and ranged are both equally important.
Base building and customizable base build.
Demoralized units needed to be "Manually" retreated out of combat. They got bonus speed, when being pinned down.
Gigantic awesome battles, bringing the true carnage of WH40k universe.
Synchronized/Animated kills, which is what Dawn of War series is all about. This game never meant to be just multiplayer/MOBA. It meant to be true to the best of its abilities Tabletop recreation of the game in RTS sense, rich in lore, rich in story, rich in dramatic flair of brutal animated combat.
Dark Chrusade was probably the best of these all, with more added factions that was more balanced than Soul Storm's and created the game of RISK in WH40k Universe setting.
What was there not to love?
Dow 2 was okay with it trying to be RPG, but it failed to bring that feeling of cargnage or strategy because of it.
DoW 3 WTF is this ♥♥♥♥?!! Seriously. There is nothing to like about this game. This is level of Command and Conquer 4 Tiberian Twilight embarassment.
I was highly hoping for Company of Heroes (destructive engine) having baby with Dawn of War I Soul Storm or Dark Chrusade at least. = AWESOMENESS.
Sometimes when you mix peanutbutter and chocolate you come out with Reeses' Ps.
In this case Relic replaced took toilet paper core and rolled bacon on it, trying to make bacon toilet paper roll, saying it is the best thing EVAH!
I mainly play SC2, Dow 1 & 3
First expansion were great.
Second expansion were great.
Thrid expansion were made by another studio/in association with other studio (lionhead i think). It tended to crash on my PC and had bug allowing to cancell outpost upgrade and get refund higher than upgrading cost so for 10-15 days after launch you could make infinite money in seconds by starting upgrade and cancelling upgrade in progress before i were patched.
Good RTS?
I'll put it that way: Between Warcraft 3: The Frozen throne and Starcraft 2 Wings of Liberty DoW1 were the only great RTS.
DoW2? It were different and while some peoples valued it above DoW2 it wasnt evn half as succesfull.
DoW3 feels like game made without love with aim to make peoples grind, has poor quality and overally feels like average game that were supposed to make alot of money thank's to its trademark and were released with pitifull 3 armies at first. It is not tragical title but even producers realised long ago that it has no future and announced end of support for this title.
I'm pretty glad that I wasnt one of optimists at release who believed that game will gradually improve and add more armies. It didnt.
Even with -75% price cut this game is hardly worth it.
Mine advice is to buy DoW1, consider DoW2 (if you dont know what to buy before sale expires)
and wait for 80-90% price cut of DoW3 because only than it will be really worth it.
What can I say more? Underdeveloped games with pitifully little content at release cannot sell well and make success even with help of trademark (which is usually ruined in process).
DoW3, SF5 are good example.
