1. DoW1 was very good
2. DoW2 was very good
3. Mordheim was very good
4. Total War is very good
5. Going back you get classic titles like Dark Omen
That said, there is a lot of of really bad games (GW giving license to mobile game makers)
And there is a few lackluster games like Battefleet Gothic, Space Hulk and this title.
Space Hulk is fine and play just like tabletop, especially Ascension is good one.Deathwing is meh,but somehow it just got very positive in last patch.
But sure there are garbage like;
- DoW 3 (Not quality wise but direction wise)
- Space Hulk: Deathwing (Not bringing a fun multiplayer exprience but they are trying to fix that.)
- Storm of Vengeance (Pure garbage)
- Space Wolves (Boring, impossible to play higher diff without giving money)
- Eisenhorn (Bad combat system on PC because it's made for phone.)
- Eternal Crusade (Created by a team who has no vision and can't deliver good stuff also scummy tactics)
And there are good Warhammer games like;
- Vermintide
- Space Hulk: Deathwing (Yes, I included this on top but it doesn't change the fact game did awesome job on atmosphere and way weapons feel.)
- Total War: Warhammer (Outside DLC content style good game.)
- DoW 1 with expensions
- DoW 2 with expensions
- Space Hulk with expension
- Tallarn
- Mordheim
While chaos gods and xenos adding a lot of twists and turns to the universe.
As you may or may not know, the whole thing is based off a table top game, where people build little model armies, paint them and play. The company that owns the brand is called Games Workshop.
Over the last few decades, the brand has developed into a robust universe with products like books that flesh out lore and background (their publishing wing is called the Black Library). Comics (will of iron series) and of course video games.
There are 2 main wings of the brand... Age of Sigmar (the fantasy version ) and 40k (futuristic universe). Smaller, Sub-Titles exist within these worlds like Mordheim and Space hulk.
The very nature and depth of the property lends itself well to many kinds of games. Whether one title is better than another is hard to answer, but some are certainly very popular (the Dawn of War series for example is quite popular; venerable even).
Since many of these titles are on sale , I would encourage you to research them a bit and then consider trying a couple if you can. Outside of using data for the download, you can always refund easily enough. Good luck!
I don't know about edgy, but yeah it's quite violent. It's also incredible vast, from a lore perspective. You could easily lose weeks researching the lore and stories, at least from 40K (the sci-fi universe). I'm reading the horus Heresy series of novels based in 40k, and it's largely excellent. It's is very, very dark though. I'm currently on book 11, and I think there's more then 40 out right now in that particular series.
As for Mordheim, it is fun but punishing.
For my 2coppers worth, I really enjoyed both of those games. Deathwing had a rough start but has steadily been improving with fixes and new content. Mordheim was fun too and is very challenging! I hope you get to give them a try someday (try the Dow games too if you can; )
Its the same reason game's movies are a no go or why books are always translated into bad movies with a few exceptions.
The guys who have the money buy the licenses and fck it up for a quick cash grab.
Dawn of war started as an RTS, morphed into a bad COH ripoff RTT game to a MOBA ripoff.
They have no idea what to do with the license.
Its like these idiots never seen games like COD or GTA and figured out that iteration with better additions leads to success.
Its like they got a single collage tier barnstorming session and went with it. Same is true for all Warhammer title or 40k titles.
Relic studios should fck off and the license should go to people who know what to do with the fcking setting.
TLDR: Non 40k fans devs get license, abuse it for quick cash grab.
For deathwing im just going to wait for ..... say... another 3 or 4 patches. The patches weren't that bad.
They sell well because there is a userbase that is already established and the aesthetic is an easy sell, but the past games of recent have really left me with the "they got me again" feeling rather than having felt like I got a great game for a fair price. It feels that too often the games rely purely upon the atmosphere and graphics of the titles.
