Why do people say graphics are cartoonish?
I just saw videos of gameplay, you can turn off the outlines and the units look fine.

Graphics looks like a cross between Dawn of War 1 and Dawn of War 2. Not as detailed as 2 but way more detailed than 1. DoW 2 has super grimdark graphics and DoW 1 was alot more colorful, and this is a perfect mix of the 2. It doesn't look as detailed as DoW 2 but that's understandable since the unit count and scale is alot bigger.

So why the complaints when it's just a blend of previous games of the franchise?

Some of the special effects and animations are more stylized and over-the-top. The actual models and basic animations are very similiar to the previous games. Many people just wanted a more "realistic" portrail of the fanasty world, and when they saw a Force Commander and Wraithlord do super hero/anime style moves, it triggered a bunch of them. It's really not that muchmore "cartoon" than the previous games. Same basic art style based off Games Workshop's table top models.

Meh, warhammer lore is over the top.

For instance how does a grey knight who is 10 feet tall take down a blood thirster which is like 100 feet tall? Just think about it, realistically the grey knight can just whack at the bloodthirsters feet, but in warhammer lore it's described as battles raging on for days where blows are traded evenly.

The grey knight would have to pull off some DBZ gymastics ♥♥♥♥♥♥ to evenly trade blows with a bloodthirster.

You have tons of stories in warhammer lore where if you think about it from a objective point of view regarding the dimensions of the combatants involved makes absolutely no sense unless some over the top stuff is involved.

It's more about personal expectations than a right or wrong.

Because a lot of people its stupid and just want a remaster of DOW1 just that, they are stuck in a 20 Years old game and they cant handle the video games needs to change

Finally, someone with common sense. Now quickly, take cover!

Really I think the issue is that a lot of the early footage and gameplay was based on snowy/ice covered maps which are predominately white in terms of color. Most of the races are colorful which makes them stand out on that background and the special effects of weapons being bright are magnified by the intensity of the white snow.

If it were darker colored maps like Typhon or Meridian from DoW II, I feel like the reception may have been different.

While a very keen observation, I think that given the target demographic Relic would have taken a beating either way.

It would've - especially for the crowd focusing on the animations and aspects such as terminators jumping.

However, if you fire up Dawn of War 2 and play through the campaign or a match of multiplayer, you can see the same effects are somewhat "overpresent" in the game as well - just not as noticable because it doesn't have the scale of Dawn of War 1 combat with the graphics of modern day.

If Dawn of War 1 was "remastered" to today, the effects would still be over the top in large battles and multiplied on brighter maps.

the animations are really flashy and floaty compared to past titles and they went a bit overboard on the particle effects, looks very MOBA-ish

Dude, don't think about it to much. It's a trend to hate on everything new. Apperently people have to much time and are bored. Just be happy if you don't have to deal with those kind of human beeings irl and enjoy whatever u like as long as it doesen't include hurting others :steamhappy:.

Becouse to sit idale is to be a ♥♥♥♥♥... which is why strategy games go to die most of the time... look at command and conquer.

As for the graphics i've played the game at events and the closed beta.

It's cartoony... you can't deny that i doubt much of you have played the game! so can't really have an opinion asides screenshots made too look good.

But yes the game is cartoony in big and small casses for example:

Armour - all freshly painted no warmarks present (ingame) they look like fresh recruits! (which they are not)
Combat - now to deny this simply means you shouldn't play 40k it's flashy and iritating all of what i played my screen was filled with daka and streamlined melee in which i couldn't see much at all!
Movement - now this is the worst... have you all seen how Gabriel moves in termi armour?! case closed.
As for the outlines and suchness all of these i was able to reduce and remove making it look nicer but if they've kept that in since alpha i wont know each build changes a fair amount.

Honestly most of you should reserve your complaints until you play the game some may like it! others may not at the end of the day for me at least it will be a good RTS for competitive players however wont be a good "40K" game.
