What kind of RTS games you want? Cause there are better options than either of those 2 (and even more so if you dont mind older games).
I would recommend you list the functioning RTS games on here. There are quite a few that were killed off by Gamespy and some of their features are completely broken without it.
Well, that would require way more effort than i am willing to give to a random person on the internet, i am sorry.
But OP doesnt own AoE2, thats a good RTS, if he wants a active MP community.
There is also all the C&C games, which due to Gamespy shutdown, now have fanmade communities and master servers (with hundreds of players) and are 100% FREE now (no need for CD-Keys or anything).
Well good thing I'm sitting on a mound of time then.
Made an edit to my post, C&C is another good (free) option all C&C games (except C&C4) can be played online for free. There is also Battlezone 98 Redux (if you dont mind first person RTS games).
So at least DoW III can claim that it was playable on launch day.
I highly recommend looking at all of these
Age of Empires II (high skill ceiling, since you're a novice RTS player I suggest playing with other new players).
Age of Empires III.
Age of Mythology.
Dawn of War 1.
Dawn of War II: Retribution (I will warn you, the game isn't optimized smoothly).
Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance (also has a high skill ceiling)
Supreme Commander 2.
Halo Wars (very simple, great campaign, decently sized playerbase, just remember it's simple and not something you can really dig your teeth into).
Star Wars Galactic Battle Grounds (currently on sale, so I highly recommend picking it up!)
Medieval II: Total War.
Battlefleet Gothic: Armada
Cossacks 3.
Company of Heroes 1.
These are RTS games that I definitely know are online. The rest is up to you.
You forgot LoTR:Battle for middle-earth. (ahh just checked its not online it seems due to EA lost the license or something I think if was also a great RTS though)
Some of my friends who own it say the only way to get it is to pirate the game. So, definitely not optimal.
These are just some RTS games on Steam that have a functional online mode. At least for now lol. Didn't think Gamespy would drop dead back in the day.
