This or Halo Wars 2?
Or wait if there is another AAA epic sci fi RTS coming soon?

Dunno of anything else coming out soon. Really depends on which interests you more

Depends what you want as an RTS, SP or MP. Don't buy this if you want SP, for MP you have to deal with massiv balance issues right now which could be patched over the month but Relic don't has a good reputation when it comes to balance. If in doubt go for Halo Wars it can't be worse than this.

I think you can download a halo wars 2 demo

In halo wars 2, they really push you to play blitz but that's still optional unless you want to play firefight with friends. You can still do 3v3 in halo wars 2 with interesting commanders. there's not much to base building and while you can rebind the controls and have a better options menu. Dow 3 has workshop support and the doctrine+ Elite choice + army is a really nice touch that I feel fills the gap that wargears abscence has left. In terms of content, Dow 3 may have more in the longer run depending on how relic handles adding additional game modes, if they add last stand and if they create expantions worth the price tag. Halo wars 2 has a nice campaign like dow 3. you can still buy dow 3 and play against an AI and refund after to get a taste and try the halo wars 2 demo on the windows store.

I did try the demo of H2 and I bought and returned Warhammer 3 mainly because I was scared off by all the negative feedback. It seems to be dying too. From 15k players already....anyway both games seemed so beautiful , especially maxed out in 21:9 but really I'm too much of a RTS novice to tell off a demo or 2hrs what is better. Any of you guys play halo wars 2? Is that dead MP wise? The Windows Store never mentions player base numbers. Also I assume it will come to steam as well the first one did and all the archade shooters.

I would recommend neither, DoW3 is worth 30 USD or so for its single player. Halo Wars 2 is garbage overall (and even so, wait for it to get released on steam).

What kind of RTS games you want? Cause there are better options than either of those 2 (and even more so if you dont mind older games).

Thats a simple question. Halo Wars 2 has a stupidly small roster of units and the two races you get to play as only have one super unit each, none of the units are customisable either. This game has three races (on release) and each one has a bunch of unique super units. I think cool units are what make an RTS and this game definitely has them. I admittedly own both and HW2 feels more like a mobile RTS than a PC one.

I would recommend you list the functioning RTS games on here. There are quite a few that were killed off by Gamespy and some of their features are completely broken without it.

Well, that would require way more effort than i am willing to give to a random person on the internet, i am sorry.

But OP doesnt own AoE2, thats a good RTS, if he wants a active MP community.

There is also all the C&C games, which due to Gamespy shutdown, now have fanmade communities and master servers (with hundreds of players) and are 100% FREE now (no need for CD-Keys or anything).

Well good thing I'm sitting on a mound of time then.

Made an edit to my post, C&C is another good (free) option all C&C games (except C&C4) can be played online for free. There is also Battlezone 98 Redux (if you dont mind first person RTS games).

I got HW2 on the day it release. Spent most of the evening just trying to get the game to run and not crash on me. This was later fixed by a patch, but the sheer number of multiplayer modes make it difficult to find a match in any reasonable length of time. Even when I did find matches, they would play at 10 FPS and with horrible input lag.

So at least DoW III can claim that it was playable on launch day.

Mister Shan, there are a few RTS games that are available on Steam that you can play.

I highly recommend looking at all of these
Age of Empires II (high skill ceiling, since you're a novice RTS player I suggest playing with other new players).
Age of Empires III.
Age of Mythology.
Dawn of War 1.
Dawn of War II: Retribution (I will warn you, the game isn't optimized smoothly).
Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance (also has a high skill ceiling)
Supreme Commander 2.
Halo Wars (very simple, great campaign, decently sized playerbase, just remember it's simple and not something you can really dig your teeth into).
Star Wars Galactic Battle Grounds (currently on sale, so I highly recommend picking it up!)
Medieval II: Total War.
Battlefleet Gothic: Armada
Cossacks 3.
Company of Heroes 1.

These are RTS games that I definitely know are online. The rest is up to you.

Some of my friends who own it say the only way to get it is to pirate the game. So, definitely not optimal.

These are just some RTS games on Steam that have a functional online mode. At least for now lol. Didn't think Gamespy would drop dead back in the day.
