is there a map editor available? can we make our own custom maps with triggers etc?

Yes! It's in the Steam game folder. (i.e. C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Dawn of War III or where ever you have it.)
If you figure out how to load a map up in game let me know, nothing I've tried works...
